Whether you like it or not, the US has elected its 47th President. Or should that be, the re-election of Donald Trump? It has taken four years of Biden's Presidency to get the 'Tango' man re-elected. In that time, Trump faced court appearances and other misdemeanours allegedly connected to him. Despite all this, Trump is now the man to take over from Biden in January 2025.
Many in the US and around the world will be ecstatic while others will be dismayed. Will we get another four years of Trumpism as it was in his first term or something different? Some say that Trump and the Republican Party have moved further to the right. J D Vance his VP or Vice-President, is a very right-of-centre politician. Ironically, Vance criticised Trump at one point. Now, for better or worse (some will say worse) Vance is the man who will be Trump's number 2. There is a large age difference between Trump and Vance. Trump is in his late 70s whereas his bearded VP is in his 30s. No doubt, Vance will want to succeed the 'Tango man' (Tango is a British orange soda drink) at some point.
Kamala Harris will be licking her political wounds. When she took over from Biden as the Democrat candidate she envigorated their campaign. Suddenly their campaign that had been flagging came to life. Donations and support came in thick and fast. The Trump campaign was shocked at the nomination of Harris by Biden as his successor. In Kamala, the Democrats had a real chance of being back at the Oval Office.
However, in the bright light of day on 6 November it wasn't to be. Despite the endorsement of celebs from Beyonce to Lady Gaga, Harris was narrowly defeated. Trump too had his share of celeb supporters like billionaire businessman Elon Musk. Now, we face the prospect of 4 years of an unpredictable man at the heart of American government.
How ironic it will be when Biden (if he is capable) hands over the job of president to his nemesis Donald Trump. Trump will be gloating at that coronation ceremony (for it might as well be). Trump will now be doing the rounds salivating at the prospect of being in the White House. Talking up his victory and how he has put Biden and Harris in the political bin of history. This should come as a caution, however, the man has survived 2 attempts on his life. One would think after such events Trump would be humbler. So, we will see how the 'Orange One' reacts to his victory.
For Evangelical, gun-toting, Bible-bashing, right-wing Christians, this will be a sign from the Almighty! Quite how guns and Jesus go together when Christ spoke about peace is beyond me!
For people like Netanyahu, the Trump victory will be a lifeline. How China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran react will be interesting. For people like Zelenskyy, it will be a nightmare come true. Many in NATO will be wondering what Trump will do. The UK has a Labour government under Sir Keir Starmer. How will the relationship between Trump and Starmer play out? Will there be echoes of Blair and Bush?
Trump may surprise many. He has spoken about making peace between Ukraine and Russia. Peace on whose terms though? Will any peace deal leave Putin in control of parts of Ukraine he has captured? Trump has also spoken of flying to Iran to meet the Ayatollah to discuss peace. Will he engage with the Supreme Leader in Tehran as he did Kim Jong-un? Will he have another meeting with the North Korean dictator again?
So, in the dying days of a failed Kamala campaign and a Biden Presidency, Trump once more, will be President. With Trump back in the White House the only certainty is the uncertainty.
