The untimely death of George Floyd has caused an eruption of protests around the country and across the globe. It has also caused the BLACK LIVES MATTER/ALL LIVES MATTER debate to resurface, as it often does when we are forced to face racism in this country. The endless conversation of "Other races deal with oppression too. Why do you have to focus on Black Lives" continues to have us all going around in circles, never getting us anywhere.
You see, there is something that many people fail to realize. When Black people hear "But ALL lives matter", "What about Black on Black crime?", "But what about (insert race here)", do you know what we're hearing? "SHUT UP ABOUT YOUR ISSUES"
There are really no words to adequatly express where many of our minds are right now. There are some Black men that I've known for many, many years who are good, honest, hard-working, law-abiding, fun men who I can tell by their latest social media statuses that they are in a totally different head space now. This hurts my heart. Even when we are doing nothing wrong, not committing a crime, not resisting arrest, just living our lives peacefully, there could still be a racist out there that's thinking, "I'm going to kill myself a Black person today" Even worse, after one of us dies, we are blamed for our own deaths. Society talks about the bad we've done, not the "potential" we had like they say about so many white criminals and killers.
Am I going to be headed to the store one day and a racist is going to decide, "I feel like killing a Black woman today" and gun me down? Is my brother who is married to an amazing white woman who I love dearly AND living in the south going to make some racist mad because of who he loves and they will run him over with a truck? Is my nephew, who has a daughter and a growing business going to have a knee on his neck because he looked "suspicious" while he was trying to go buy his daughter cereal? Is my now pregnant with her second child niece going to be shoved and beaten by a racist just for sitting in a park? Is her five year old son going to get tear gassed in the face by a racist cop or shot in the park because his toy truck "looked like a gun"? Is her husband going to be shot while in the house playing with their son and new baby?
Please understand, people of color live with these types of possibilities EVERY SINGLE DAY. No other race has had to deal with being murdered because of their skin color and skin color alone.
Please stop reminding us that "All Lives Matter". We KNOW. "Black on Black crime"? Yes, we KNOW. Our communities have to do better dealing with how we deal with each other. Recent attacks on innocent Asian-Americans due to Corona Virus panic is WRONG. Yes, labeling Mexicans as "rapists and murderers" is WRONG. Keeping immigrant children in cages is WRONG. Using Latino men and women for their culture and talent and yet still treating them with racist contempt if WRONG. Killing someone because of their sexual orientation is WRONG. All murders not in defense of one's life and denial of basic human rights is WRONG. However, let me submit this. If your house is on fire, do you not try to put out the fire and save your house because "All Houses Matter"? No. You are going to try to save your house. Right now, OUR house is the one that's burning down and in immediate danger. That doesn't mean we will let YOUR house burn down. Let us save our house first.
Despite it all though, I am grateful to see people of all races in so many countries who have seen what racism is doing and are standing up. That gives me hope. Some people are trying hard to understand and are helping and emphathizing. I want to say thank you to those people. Thank you for trying to love us better in the midst of all this hate.
