There's a line in an early episode of Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing where White House chief of staff Leo McGarry (played by the late John Spencer) tells the staff that "There are two things in the world you never want to let people see how you make 'em: laws and sausages." Yet the process by which a bill becomes law has proven to be rich ground for writers and filmmakers from Advise & Consent to Aaron Sorkin efforts like The American President and the aforementioned West Wing. More recently, filmmaker John Madden has turned to the lobbying efforts that help make bills law for his film Miss Sloane, starring Jessica Chastain in the title role.

The Magnificent Seven or Magnificent Minorities?
Growing up in the seventies and eighties, I remember movies always typically had a majority white cast of characters with maybe one or two minorities and typically the hero of the film. It was typical and predictable for horror films and action movies to almost always have an African American sidekick or hero make it to the end of the movie and killed off in the last 15 or 20 minutes. Gradually movies and television have gone away from that somewhat with African American, Hispanic and Asian lead characters which lead to creating fresh storytelling and new themes with not as predictable plots as in the past.

Must See Movies About Politics
Often when we look at the political theater, it almost seems like the political maneuvers senators and generals pull are facelifted from the latest cinematic political thriller, almost as though real life is following a movie script. Still, Hollywood can't be beaten when it comes to entertaining political madness (as opposed to real life's soul crushing political madness). Cinematic politicians speak with unmatched eloquence, dressed to impress, and don't look like melted ice cream sundaes stuffed into a suit. Politicians in the movies may be sometimes corrupt, but oftentimes they fight for the American ideal. Or other times, we see the man--normal people, outside the political theater--fighting for the American way. That’s what audiences long for: a movie that can be at once thrilling, exciting, and inspiring. The very best political movies leave us breathless, leave us inspired, and leave us with an impression about what this country could be if only the cards fell just into place.
