Starmer Talks to Trump.

Greenland and Bella 1, aka Marinera.

Starmer and Trump.

Sir Keir Starmer spoke to President Trump on the telephone last night. They spoke at length, according to a Downing Street Spokesman, about Greenland and the tanker Bella 1 or Marinera. Sir Keir Starmer's view on Greenland is in line with other European leaders. That is, they stand with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Ms. Frederiksen has said that if the US were to invade Greenland, it would be the end of NATO. And rightly so, Denmark and America are NATO Allies. It would be a literal stab in Denmark's back if America went ahead and invaded Denmark. How can a friendship stand when your close friend has done something to offend you? That would be the case between the US and Denmark over Greenland. It would only embolden people like Putin.

A statement from both Sir Keir and Europe is that what happens to Greenland is up to the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark. Greenland is an autonomous region in North America that belongs to Denmark. Greenland's population includes ex-pat Danes living there, but the majority of the population is similar to the Inuit or Native Americans. It has a capital, and Danish special forces are based there. It has its own government and can make its own rules to some extent. Independence for Greenland is a concept spoken about within Greenland and between Greenland and Denmark. Conversely, being under US ownership is something else.

The US has had a military presence there since World War II. Back when the 2nd World War was raging, the US presence was to stop German forces from capturing Greenland, as Denmark had fallen. As the war ended, Denmark once again became the sovereign power over Greenland.

However, as the threat of the Soviet Union loomed, the US was allowed to keep a military base there. The same is true today with Russia and China being a clear and present danger. What is wrong with this present arrangement between the US and Denmark, I cannot say.

But obviously, with Trump in a land-grabbing mood on the back of his successful seizure of Maduro, he wants Greenland to be part of the USA. He says that the US owning Greenland would be for the defence of the US, Greenland, and Europe. That may be true, but at the same time, one has to be aware that Greenland has minerals. And that's obviously what Trump has his eye on. Greenland isn't the only territory that Trump has his eyes on. He has his eyes on Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, Cuba, Panama, and Colombia. Whether he will take action on these lands remains to be seen. Nevertheless, in Western capitals, alarm bells have been ringing.

Sir Keir also discussed the boarding and capturing of the Bella 1 or Marinera heading for Russia. This rogue tanker was being hunted by US forces because it was associated with the regime in Caracas. Russian warships were supposedly on their way to shadow the ship. However, the Americans got there first in the North Atlantic. Britain also helped out in the seizure of the tanker.

Unlike Greenland, Sir Keir Starmer, in using British forces to help seize the tanker, was with Trump on this one. Sir Keir even said he approved of the US raid into Venezuela to seize Maduro. Mr. Starmer said he would shed no tears over the capture of Nicolas Maduro.

We know that the two leaders discussed Greenland and the boarding of the tanker. Conversely, we do not have a transcript of what exactly was exchanged between Trump and Starmer. But as is the manner of these things, we will never know the true conversation of what Starmer and Trump said.
