Republicans, Can You Really Trust Trump?
How a Campaign Built on Lies Threatens Democracy for All Americans
The 2024 Election: A Campaign of Misinformation
The 2024 U.S. presidential election has shown us just how far some candidates and influencers will go to manipulate the truth. President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have used their platforms and influence to spread blatant lies and misleading information to the public. Trump’s campaign, fueled by fabricated claims, and Musk’s actions on X (formerly Twitter) to amplify and promote disinformation, have turned this election into a circus of deceit and made it harder for voters to distinguish truth from fiction. They won this election on a campaign of deception, plain and simple.
Trump’s False Narratives and His Dangerous Manipulation of the Truth
Let’s be real: Trump has built his entire narrative around lies designed to create fear and distrust. He has continuously spread fabrications that misrepresent critical issues such as immigration, crime, the economy, and public health. From falsely claiming that schools conduct gender-affirming surgeries without parental consent to accusing Vice President Kamala Harris of diverting disaster funds to migrants, his rhetoric has painted a distorted and damaging picture of America. One particularly troubling claim was his assertion that immigrants were not only overwhelming towns and cities but also "eating pets" in Ohio—a fantastical accusation with no basis in reality.
On immigration, Trump falsely alleged that foreign governments were releasing criminals and mentally ill individuals into the U.S. His economic claims were similarly misleading, such as his insistence that tariffs imposed on foreign goods would harm only other countries, ignoring the economic burden they place on American consumers. What’s worse is Trump’s refusal to accept basic truths about his own record. He’s denied trying to repeal Obamacare, despite a mountain of evidence. He claimed Capitol rioters were unarmed when video footage clearly showed otherwise. Trump even lied about Harris having a meeting with Vladimir Putin that never happened. These falsehoods, paired with his attempts to undermine democratic norms, have shaped public debate in dangerous ways.
The Red Communist Uniform: Musk's Disinformation and Kamala Harris
A particularly nefarious incident of disinformation came from Elon Musk’s platform, X, where he helped amplify a fake image of Kamala Harris dressed in a red communist-style uniform. The image was not just another instance of political smearing; it was a clear attempt to associate Harris with authoritarian ideologies, further stoking political division and fear. The image, though fabricated, spread across the platform and was viewed by 80 million people, contributing to a broader climate of misinformation where lies gain viral traction and are perceived as truth.
This type of disinformation has serious implications, as it fuels distrust, encourages harmful stereotypes, and undermines political discourse. By using X as a platform to disseminate falsehoods like these, Musk has played a dangerous role in fostering division and confusion, weakening the fabric of democratic debate. The negative effects of such misinformation are long-lasting, as it distorts the public’s perception of the political landscape.

Trump’s Fabrications About McDonald's and Lies on His Campaign Trail
Then there’s Trump’s outrageous claim that Harris never worked at McDonald’s and that McDonald’s confirmed this story. Let me be clear: McDonald’s didn’t confirm anything. The company issued a statement saying, “McDonald’s does not verify or comment on the past employment of any individual, and we certainly did not confirm this false narrative.” This is a textbook example of Trump’s habit of twisting reality to fit his agenda.
This claim, though seemingly trivial, serves as a microcosm of Trump’s broader pattern of fabricating stories to shape a narrative that suits his political agenda. The McDonald’s issue exemplifies his willingness to lie, even about personal history, making it clear that truth is often irrelevant in his drive to control the narrative. This unchecked lying is particularly dangerous when it extends to critical matters of national policy, as his fabrications sow confusion and distrust among the public.
**FEMA Disaster Funds and Immigrant Redirect Claims
In one of his more egregious fabrications, Trump falsely claimed that disaster relief funds from FEMA were being diverted to assist immigrants. This claim painted a false picture of the government’s priorities, suggesting that funds meant for disaster recovery were being used to support illegal immigration. However, no evidence has supported this allegation, and FEMA has made clear that its resources are exclusively allocated to disaster response efforts, not immigration support. This lie fueled further division and distrust, undermining public confidence in the management of national emergencies.
Tariffs and Economic Impact
Another of Trump’s deceptive claims revolves around tariffs. While he argued that tariffs would punish foreign countries, he ignored the impact they would have on American consumers. Tariffs on Chinese imports, for example, led to higher prices for everyday goods, contributing to inflation and straining household budgets. Trump's insistence that these tariffs only hurt foreign nations failed to account for the complex global supply chain that ultimately impacts the American public.
The Supreme Court and Trump’s Immunity: A Dangerous Combination
One of the most alarming developments in the 2024 election cycle is the Supreme Court’s ruling granting Donald Trump immunity, which combines dangerously with his propensity to lie and spread misinformation. This legal protection, coupled with Trump’s track record of fabricating false narratives, presents a profound threat to democracy in the United States.
The Supreme Court's decision to grant Trump immunity means he cannot be held accountable for certain actions taken while in office, essentially allowing him to continue spreading lies without fear of legal repercussions. This combination of unchecked falsehoods and legal protection creates a power dynamic where a political leader can manipulate the truth with impunity, undermining public trust in institutions and distorting democratic processes.
The danger of this scenario is not limited to one political party or group. Trump’s lies are not just harmful to his political opponents; they erode the foundation of trust that democracy depends on. When lies are not confronted and corrected, they warp public opinion on critical issues like immigration, the economy, and national security. This damage extends to all Americans - Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike. Misinformation makes it impossible to have informed debates about policies that affect everyone, from healthcare to economic reform, leaving the public vulnerable to manipulation.
The Role of Misinformation Platforms
Elon Musk’s acquisition of X, initially framed as an effort to champion free speech, has instead facilitated the spread of harmful disinformation. Musk has allowed falsehoods to flourish on the platform, such as misleading claims about immigrants being brought into the U.S. to vote for Democrats, which reached millions of viewers. Moreover, Musk’s actions have been inconsistent with his professed commitment to free speech. While he positions himself as a defender of expression, he has silenced critics on X who dared to call out his misinformation, banning them for doing what he supposedly stands for. How’s that for irony? Musk’s so-called “free speech” crusade is nothing more than a smokescreen for amplifying his personal agenda and spreading deception.
X’s history of amplifying false claims, including the fake image of Harris, highlights a dangerous trend where misinformation is allowed to flourish, unchecked by platform moderation. Musk’s failure to properly regulate content on his platform has exacerbated the problem, making it easier for malicious actors to spread lies that shape public opinion in harmful ways.
Furthermore, X has been criticized for prioritizing political interests that align with Musk’s business ventures. In countries where Tesla or Starlink has significant operations, such as India and Turkey, X has been more accommodating to government censorship requests. This self-serving bias stands in direct contradiction to Musk's self-professed stance on defending freedom of expression.
The Broader Impact of Disinformation
Disinformation is not just a political tool; it has far-reaching consequences for society at large. The spread of false narratives, especially those about immigration, crime, and economic conditions, has shaped voters’ perceptions, often with little basis in reality. Trump’s false claims about migrants crossing the border and committing crimes have caused widespread fear and resentment, despite evidence showing that immigrants, on average, contribute positively to society. Similarly, Trump’s economic misrepresentations have misled many Americans into believing the economy is in worse shape than it actually is, despite indicators like low unemployment and positive GDP growth under the Biden administration.
Let’s also not forget the problem of polarization. Too many people are spreading lies, knowing they’re false, just to score political points. This normalization of dishonesty erodes trust and damages democracy.
How Can We Trust Trump?
This brings us to some critical questions: Are we okay with this level of lying in our politics? Does it make us more informed voters? Would Republicans accept it if Democrats were the ones spreading this level of disinformation?
And here’s the bigger question for Republicans: How can you trust Donald Trump as he heads into a second term? If he’s willing to lie so blatantly to win votes, how can you believe he’ll tell the truth once he’s in office? Trump’s presidency has already been marked by deception, and his campaign proves he’s doubling down on those tactics. Do you think someone who will say anything to win will suddenly become honest when given unchecked power? If Trump can’t be trusted on the campaign trail, why should anyone—Republican or not—believe him when it really counts?
Is this really the kind of leadership we want to normalize? A presidency built on lies doesn’t just erode trust in Trump; it chips away at the credibility of the entire political system. If we continue down this path, the consequences for democracy could be catastrophic.
Solutions for a Better Information Ecosystem
To combat the dangers of disinformation, several solutions must be prioritized:
1. Content Moderation: Social media platforms must improve their moderation practices to prevent the spread of falsehoods. These platforms must step up to fight falsehoods instead of profiting from them.
2. Digital Literacy: Educational initiatives should help people critically assess online information and identify fake content.
3. Accountability: Political actors and tech platforms must be held accountable for the lies they spread, with consequences for those who perpetuate falsehoods.
4. *Public Awareness: Encouraging skepticism and fostering critical thinking can help mitigate the impact of disinformation.
It is crucial for voters to understand the stakes involved in the fight against disinformation. With the combination of Trump’s lies, the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling, and the amplification of these lies on platforms like X, the threat to democracy becomes even more pronounced. The 2024 election has shown us how disinformation can be weaponized to win at any cost. Only through a concerted effort to tackle these issues can the public be protected from manipulation and disinformation. It’s up to all of us to push back against these tactics and protect the integrity of our democracy.
RHC’s Thoughts: I know that all politicians lie. But to put what donald trump is doing on the same level as the others is not factually correct. He has taken the lies and disinformation to a whole new level. He is a non-stop echo machine with the lies saying the same things over and over to the point that it has become a form of brainwashing. Donald trump and his elite billionaire friend Elon Musk are knowingly lying to the US public on a grand scale like we’ve never seen before. I liken this level of lies and intentional disinformation to selling your soul to the devil for power and financial gain. There is something very wrong in how they are doing things. History will be very harsh on donald trump and Elon Musk. Their descendants will be bowing their heads in shame.

It's interesting seeing people's take on disinformation. Living in Canada, I get to watch people spread disinformation about what life is like in Canada all the time. From our own government funded CBC, to our "free" healthcare system. But as an outsider it's interesting seeing Americans be "critical thinkers" toward one side, but not their own. Has it not once bothered you that: - Biden showed signs of dementia. - Cabinet ministers could not gain direct access to Biden, but had to speak to his handlers. - FEMA did not respond to homes in Florida with Trump flags in their yard or known to be a Trump supporter under orders of a higher up. - People still spread that Trump called neo-nazis "very fine people". Even Snopes verified the claim as false. - Old Twitter owners were paid by government bodies such as FBI and CIA to censor the platform, while child pornography ran rampant with accounts not being taken down even after being reported. I ask you these because your alignment is clear, but I want to know, can you be critical toward both ends? Propaganda is a tool that will always be in use by all sides. Free speech is one of the few things that can combat disinformation, but with it comes the potential for more lies. The difference is, without it, there is no discerning truth from fiction. Take what happened in Germany. How many outlets said "a car drove through a christmas market" or something similar referring to the vehicle like it was autonomous? It'd be like saying "An AR15 shot up a highschool" or "A knife stabbed this person to death". What do you think the reason was for that particular headline to be used in nearly all reportings of the incident?
Eating pets? wow, that’s a bit far fetched and a little outlandish. Disinformation is a pretty big deal and you did very well in outlining the how’s and whys. This was very well written. Your use of headings made this piece easy to follow, I learnt a lot and it’s very sad that we are in a position where we are forced to trust leaders who are untrustworthy. Under the heading, ‘how can we trust trump’ you’ve raised some pretty good questions. 👌🏽👏🏽 and congratulations on your honourable mention under most discussed stories on this weeks leaderboard 🎉🥳🎊
Congratulations on the Honorable Mention this week with this story! Well done!
It baffles me how anyone can like him given his track record.
I read a book 25 years ago or so called 'History of the Future.' In it, they talk about the death of government. This current situation feels like the beginning of the book's narrative. Not sure where the book is now but I now MUST find it (online, or wherever) to reread that chapter again. And now, so many voters are questioning their vote for him because they didn't do the research on these claims on how to "fix" the economy. This story can't end well. His first term didn't. Jan 6th alone should have been enough evidence to highlight the fact that he can't be trusted to do the right thing. I do believe (but have a hard time accepting) that no matter who the republican nominee was, people were voting republican this time around. A dollar more for a loaf of bread apparently has a strong impact on swaying the vote. So, he is not as special or sought after than he thinks. He just happened to be the nominee. It will all backfire.
Wow! It is a scary time, that is for sure. It sure brought out the ugliness in this country. More trauma to come from this.😢😭 I prayed every morning about this and I was disappointed with the results but got the message that things will be taken care of in time. I don't know if it will be in my time. It is the worst political time in my 70 years. All the ugly name-calling would never have happened prior to Trump. There was respect given even when your candidate lost. Around me anyway. 💗
I do not trust him. I have not trusted him. I also do not trust the 'press' and I use that word loosely. Main stream media used to be a few TV neews shows and several national papers. Now anyone can be the 'press'. Disseminating 'news' to people that don't know how , or refuse, to use critical thinking polarized a nation and brought us here.
A friend of mine and I were discussing Elon Devil Musk today. She concluded the billionaires would set up another planet to move to and after they blow this one up. It sounds extremely far-fetched. However, considering the fact that at this time in this decade nothing is far out. This is a far more complicated regime than just rumpus. The Heritage Foundation and the Federalist society are culprits to the lies in order to facilitate their agenda which resembles Nazism or a form of a dictatorship. As a young child I never imagined that The Twilight Zone TV show would actually happen. These are going to be mysterious and perpetual times to join the resistance
Great piece!! Unfortunately 1) you can’t fix stupid and 2) his followers don’t care that he lies, and 3) they have been setting this up for years… from first the misinformation; getting people not to trust the media; breaking our systems down stone by stone from the base until it all crumbles. Elon and the others backing him want power and more money and have found. Stephen Miller is behind a lot of their great ideas (!!) They found the orange cult leader patsy to be their idiot leader. It is a cult. They will see soon. People just want to listen to quick snippets of angry loudmouths and not research - the information age should have made it easy to find truth but so much blasts us each day, the young ones (and some old) can’t sort through it; some won’t. If they fire everyone at FBI then who pays that unemployment? Federal agencies are responsible for funding unemployment benefits for their laid-off employees. Get rid of unemployment- sure, then what? Their rotten cruel ideas will crumble too.
As for their descendants, they both are a factory baby and that's how they like it. E. Musk has 12 children and nothing says he is going to stop his production. I think he's trying to produce as many future Mars colonisers as he possibly can. I doubt he has not have that thought at least once.
As a Canadian, I see the implications and changes that will occur. I also see how divided a nation can become. I hope time heals
Well, I was just disappointed that Elon Musk, someone I admire for the work he has done across several industries, got involved not just in politics but with Donald Trump. The fact is, I am now very conflicted. In the past, I said many times that E.Musk would be a good president. I even said he should be the planet's leader. But why? Why he had to team up with Donny T? Mind you, the laugh of the other candidate is way too annoying and she doesn't come as too smart either. But then again, how come people can't choose more dignified, smarter, and more qualified people for the top office?
Yeah, I agree with almost all of this, but at the same time realize the dems just lost an election and need a change of messaging. Honey gets more bees than vinegar. The 4 years will go by, ppl will realize just how plain mean the republicans can be all over again, and we'll be at the next election. Anyway at the end of the day, I believe both parties are both pitching us stories that they don't really believe themselves, and in quiet, almost every politicians' voting record in congress is 99% for whoever pays them campaign donations. (check out any congress vote about israel, big pharm, or military spending) History is a good antidote to end of the world, end of democracy type thinking. After watching Youtube, I was kind of shocked how similar the 1972 election was to 2024, there was even a black women running for president (how different the world would be today if she had won back in 1972!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4laVGl80p7Y
My short answer is "yes" but my final answer is: "I put my trust in God."
