NATO and Russia: The Relation

My view as a 7th grader

The history of souring relations between The Soviet Union and NATO dates all the way back to the cold war. In 1947. The war wasn’t really a war between 2 Groups of Countries like the World War but it was a clash between ideologies. Nato was in favor of Democracy while Russia was in favor of Communism. It all started when the Soviet Union created Communist puppet states as a buffer zone between West Europe and East Europe. This action created a bunch more Communist-Soviet Puppet States. This suggested that the Soviet Union was trying to spread Communism. This triggered the West and they created NATO. From then on the Cold War started. The US created the Marshall plan and sent 13.3 Billion Dollars USD to Europe to help with World War 2 Recovery. Because of this the Buffer States started getting restless and were about to leave when Soviet president Nikita S. Khrushchev created COMECON a Financial Aid Plan. But it was to no avail. The Buffer States were still unhappy. A classic example of this division was the City of Berlin. West Berlin was so economically well of and was a common place for East Berliners to go to. Some people seeing the prosperity of the West decided to even stay in West Berlin. Because of that the Soviet Union set up a wall to stop East Berliners from entering West Berlin, because of this president, John F. Kennedy said “ Democracy is not perfect, but we never had to build a wall to keep our people in.” After that relationships started souring more and more. Until one day both sides got so close to an all-out Nuclear War.

Well, how does this relate? Today President Vladimir Putin has stopped sending gas exports to Western Europe. This means countries in Western Europe barely have any gas. This is because European Countries have been depending on Russia’s Gas and Oil exports for decades. Germany has been getting 55% of its gas from Russia. Imagine not having half of the energy you need to keep your country running. But the downside for this though is that Russia makes a lot of income through Gas Exports to Western Europe. Because of this, their Economy is taking a big hit. But they think the risk is worth it because if they stop sending gas exports to Western Europe then Western Europe won’t have the budget or materials to send aid to Ukraine. This means Russia will be able to win the War faster. Well, why is Ukraine so important to Russia? Well before the war Ukraine was about to join NATO. If Ukraine did then it would have a Domino effect on the Baltic States and Finland. If they also joined NATO then Russia wouldn’t have any way to push NATO back and it would be way easier for NATO to launch an invasion of Russia. If Russia wins the war in Ukraine then it would instill fear in the Baltic States and Finland and would stop them from joining NATO. This would mean Russia would be able to keep the buffer zone between itself and NATO.

Great job! Ukraine isn't just important for Russia in a manner of instilling fear into the baltic area and beyond, the Crimea is also geologically important as well because of its warmer waters. Russian ports freeze in the winter, and the only sea they have had access to was the Baltic Sea. Capturing the Crimea solves two problems: 1 ports that don't freeze in the winter. And 2 it is connected to the Mediterranean Sea (a major trade route).
