Hudson River Helicopter Crash 2025 Spanish Business Tycoon’s Family Among 6 Dead Cause Updates & Investigation.
April 10 2025 Jersey City New Jersey
A devastating helicopter crash in the Hudson River on Thursday afternoon claimed the lives of all six people on board including a prominent Spanish businessman his family and the pilot. The sightseeing helicopter operated by New York Helicopters plunged into the river just minutes after taking off raising fresh concerns over the safety of urban air tours. The passengers included Agustín Escobar the president of Siemens Spain his wife Mercè Camprubí Montal and their three children aged 4-8 and 10. The family was in New York City to celebrate the birthday of their 8 year old child. Tragically the celebration turned into a national and international heartbreak. The pilot a 36 year old New York native also perished in the crash. All six bodies were recovered from the river by emergency response teams who rushed to the scene shortly after the helicopter disappeared from radar. The helicopter a Bell 206L 4 Long ranger IV took off from the Downtown Manhattan Heliport at 2:59 p.m. on a routine sightseeing flight. At approximately 3:17 p.m just 18 minutes into the trip the aircraft experienced an in flight breakup and crashed upside down into the Hudson River near Newport Jersey City. Witnesses reported hearing strange noises and seeing the aircraft break apart mid air. Several nearby boaters and pedestrians called emergency services as they watched the chopper spiral downward.
Possible Cause Mast Bumping
Initial reports from aviation experts and investigators suggest that the likely cause of the crash was a phenomenon called mast bumping. This occurs when the helicopter's rotor hub makes contact with the mast often due to sudden or extreme control inputs. It is especially dangerous in helicopters with semi rigid rotors such as the Bell 206L 4. Experts also point out that windy and turbulent conditions around Manhattan’s skyscrapers may have contributed to the situation making the helicopter unstable in flight. Though the exact cause remains under investigation mast bumping is a rare but deadly occurrence in helicopter aviation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a joint investigation into the incident. Investigators are reviewing flight records maintenance logs and weather conditions at the time of the crash. The helicopter built in 2004 and leased from Meridian Helicopters had a valid airworthiness certificate until 2029. It passed recent maintenance inspections making the crash all the more shocking to aviation experts. New York City Mayor Eric Adams expressed deep condolences to the families stating Our city mourns this unspeakable loss. We extend our prayers to the victims’ families.
President Donald Trump also commented on the tragedy assuring that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is monitoring the investigation closely. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the incident as an unimaginable tragedy and has pledged to assist the affected family’s relatives in any way possible.
Safety Concerns Renewed
This is the first fatal helicopter crash in New York City since 2019. The tragic event has reignited debates over the safety of sightseeing helicopter tours in urban areas. Critics have long argued that such flights pose unnecessary risks in crowded airspaces filled with unpredictable weather patterns and architectural turbulence. The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report within the next few weeks and depending on the findings new safety regulations for sightseeing tours may be introduced.
