Sir Keir on Energy Bills Coming Down.

People have been afraid to turn on their heating over winter lest they cannot afford their bills. So, you envisioned people wearing warmer clothing to keep warm. What a 'Dickensian' way to live in the 21st Century too. The government at the time blamed the war between Russia and Ukraine. No doubt, this did contribute to the spike in energy bills. However, the UK did not and does not receive gas from the Russians. As far as I am aware, our gas supply comes from Norway. Rishi Sunak allowed new drilling in the North Sea to exploit gas reserves. He granted new licences to companies hoping to make money out of this. Sunak must have been thinking long term for the UK to be self-sufficient in gas and maybe, oil. However, critics said this long-term scenario was not a game changer in the short term. This policy depending on fossil fuels was a rowing back on the government's policy on renewable energy. Labour has subsequently scrapped this policy.

Sir Keir Starmer was speaking about the founding of a government energy company. In Runcorn, Cheshire, Sir Keir spoke about how the 'Crown Estate' an organisation linked to the Royal family is partnering with GB Energy. In this way, Sir Keir hoped to attract investors to make GB Energy a roaring success. Sir Keir says that this will bring down high energy bills. Sky News Science and Energy Correspondent Tom Clarke asked the Prime Minister whether he was "confident" bills would come down. Given the length of time needed to develop offshore wind farms. To this question, Mr. Starmer replied "Yes".

Sir Keir has been realistic in not setting a linear timeline for when bills will come down. Given that this is a tremendous undertaking things may happen quickly or take time. There may also be upheavals on the road to bringing bills down. Nothing, even the most well-intentioned idea, ever goes to plan. So the public will have to be patient but at least the Prime Minister is taking us in the right direction. How long it will take for the UK to be free of dependency on fossil fuels cannot be said.

The UK, when compared to the US, India, China, etc, is not one of the massive global polluters. However, Western nations like the UK must do their bit to lower pollution levels. If Trump gets back into the White House you can kiss goodbye to lower pollution levels. Trump is literally invested in oil and gas as they were His backers when he first stood to be president. No doubt, as he faces Kamala Harris, they will be His backers again. So, with the oil and gas industry backing Trump's campaign Donald is tied to them. So having invested in His campaign, Trump will have to deliver on His promises to make the US fossil fuel dependent. Trump, however, is not soulless when it comes to the environment. Trump observed once that wind farms are a blot on the landscape. Trump also highlighted the number of birds killed by the propellers/sails (call them what you will) of wind farms. Unfortunately, as with all human progress (if you can call it that), you cannot make an omelette without breaking some eggs.

King Charles has been known as an environmentalist and would have welcomed 'Great British Energy'. Its ethos is on wind energy and other renewable energies. Hence the Royal Estate going into partnership with GB Energy. Sir Keir must have discussed the idea of GB Energy with Charles. Charles would have concurred with Sir Keir in setting up GB Energy.
