Elite Golani Brigade Base Hit.

Israel's Elite Brigade Targeted.

By Nicholas BishopPublished about a year ago 4 min read
IDF Golani Brigade.

Hezbollah launched a swarm of drones into Israel that got through Israel's sophisticated air defence network. The drones or drone struck a base of the elite Golani Brigade in Binyamina, a town south of Haifa. 7 people were injured and 4 Israeli soldiers were killed. The sirens that normally warn of an incoming attack failed to go off. Questions are being asked in Israel how did Hezbollah pull off such an attack? Did it get lucky or has Hezbollah found a way around the IDF's sophisticated air defence network? Were the sirens hacked?

One thing is for sure the attack that struck its target will have a lot of Israelis in the military and elsewhere scratching their heads!

Hezbollah said it fired a missile at an IDF logistics base in the Golan Heights. If it did any damage there appears to be no news forthcoming. The Iron Dome and other Israeli air defence may be one of the best systems in the world if not the best, however, it is not very good at targeting drones. Hezbollah is aware that this is the IDF's air defence systems 'Achilles Heel' and they took advantage of it. The US has approved the introduction of the 'THAAD' air defence system to be operated in Israel by US troops. Israel has said it will hit back at Iran after Iran's missile strikes on Israel on October 1. Iran has already said if it is struck by Israel it will strike back even harder. The 'THAAD' system must be more up-to-date and more accurate than anything Israel has.

Biden has been speaking to Netanyahu about not striking Iran's nuclear facilities or its oil industry. Whether the rogue Israeli Prime Minister will listen is another thing. Far-right elements of Netanyahu's cabinet are all in favour of striking these targets. So what Israel will do will remain to be seen. The US has threatened that if Israel does attack Iran's nuclear facilities in particular, the US will cut off aid to the Jewish state. If Israel strikes Iran's oil facilities the US is worried about the price of oil going up. Whatever targets Israel strikes will bring down on Israel, an Iranian response. The US, UK, and the West in general have Israel's back. So any attack on Iran will have the blessing and backing of the West, especially the US. As long as it is not Iran's nuclear or oil industry. However, we will have to wait and see what transpires.

Israel has taken two weeks to decide what Iranian sights are ripe for attack. Israel has stated the attack will be like nothing Iran has seen before. It will be swift and precise Israel. It's clear from the above statements that Israel wants to hurt the Iranians hard.

The number of casualties in the Hezbollah attack is 65 according to the BBC which contradicts the reportage from Al Jazeera. Nevertheless, however many people were killed or injured it shows Hezbollah is not out of the fight. Israel has stated that it has destroyed Hezbollah's munitions by 30%. Hezbollah has suffered greatly at the hands of Israel and admits it has received catastrophic blows. Like the killing of its Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. Like the taking out of top commanders in a continual bombing campaign in Lebanon by Israel. 2,000 Lebanese civilians have been killed with towns and villages in the south being reduced to rubble. Nevertheless, like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah is still able to kill and maim IDF soldiers in southern Lebanon. To lob projectiles over the border into Israel causing northern Israel to be devoid of a population.

Israel has accused UN forces based in Lebanon of protecting Hezbollah or being used as human shields for the group. Netanyahu said to the Director General of the UN "to get UN troops out of harm's way" as he put it. However, the UN troops made up of Irish and other nationalities are going nowhere. The Secretary-General has made this abundantly clear. So what happens to the UN troops caught between the IDF and Hezbollah is unclear. Certainly, they cannot patrol keeping the peace. They have been attacked by mistake or on purpose by the IDF allegedly. What are the rules of engagement for the UN troops? Do they have the authority to defend themselves if targeted by either side on purpose? The UN describes any attacks on its service personnel as a war crime.

So, Netanyahu carries on knowing he has the full backing of the US. Israel's attacks on Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and Syria will carry on. He may be wanted for crimes of corruption in Israel or wanted for being a war criminal, nevertheless, as long as he can keep fighting he will. The fighting keeps him safe from prosecution. So not only is Netanyahu at war with Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, etc, but it looks like he is picking a fight with the United Nations.

Israel does have the right to defend itself, however, this war has gone beyond that now. Netanyahu and his band of far-right political and religious nutjobs could plunge the whole region into a wider war and with that God forbid, the wider world.
