Dutch Drop Parachuted Aid.
Much Needed Supplies for Gaza.
As Netanyahu's policy of occupying the whole Gaza Strip goes ahead, the Dutch Air Force dropped food and water into Gaza. The Jordanians loaded up the much-needed supplies. Then, the Dutch transport planes took off from Jordan and dropped the aid into the devastated Gaza Strip. The Netherlands NOS media broadcaster reported this.
The Netherlands has planned for such flights for the next two weeks. Israel has restricted food aid, allowing the odd truck in or airdrops. The Jordanians themselves, along with other Arab nations, airdropped supplies the other week. The United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs stated that while "every attempt to provide aid is welcome", airdrops cannot replace overland deliveries. "In terms of aid, scale, and effectiveness, there's no alternative to land aid. A truck can transport far more at a much lower cost," said the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs. Following up on this statement, OXFAM said, "air drops are a last resort".
Israel has restricted supplies from going in. Only allowing the odd truck to go in or occasional air drops. The Dutch Acting Caretaker Foreign Minister described conditions in Gaza as "catastrophic". And they are catasprophic. Gaza has been reduced to a car park. Once inhabited towns, cities, and villages have been reduced to rubble or back to their very foundations. Everything that gives a modern society its vibe has been destroyed. Thousands of dead lie under the eviserated buildings. Gazans have not only been killed in alleged attacks on Hamas strongholds, but also in refugee camps, hospitals, churches, mosques, and education facilities. Even refugee camps are fair game, with people being burnt alive in tents.
Netanyahu's idea of releasing the hostages and defeating Hamas since October 7 has gone unrealised. Yes, the horrors Hamas unleashed on those Israelis in the kibutz were awful and should, as Piers Morgan rightly says, "Be condemned". Morgan will have no truck with people who do not condemn Hamas's actions on that day. However, he is equally critical of Israel, its government and the way it has made Gaza look like Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Morgan argues that if Israel carried out pin-prick attacks on Hezbollah, knocking the group out of the war, why couldn't the same situation have been carried out with Hamas? In the war with Iran, Israel targeted the regime's areas of power in pin-prick attacks. So why has Israel chosen to devastate Gaza? Israel has deliberately destroyed Gaza as if punishing the whole population, even those who have nothing to do with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and any other group.
The statements by Ben Gvir and Smotrich prove this. Israel has stated it wants to make a greater Israel. Israel is not only in Gaza now, it is in southern Lebanon, and even Syria. Israel shows no signs of giving up their presence in these territories.
One wonders if the Americans under Trump are even serious about a ceasefire deal. Whatever Trump says about Israel's actions in Gaza, Trump remains 100% behind Israel. Trump could pull the plug on Israel if he wanted to, and he has reportedly reprimanded Netanyahu. However, he chooses not to step in and end the war. All the ceasefire talks, even if they have held for a while, have all been in vain. All the negotiations for what?
The UK and other Western nations recognising a state of Palestine doesn't help. The war continues because Netanyahu has climbed into bed with fascists to ensure his political survival. Netanyahu has been called the "Godfather of Jewish fascism". Netanyahu knows that if he falls from power, he will face charges of corruption. Internationally, if the chance arises, he and his former defence minister Yoav Galant will face charges of crimes against humanity.
Netanyahu has now decided to occupy all of Gaza. As if the IDF's presence in Gaza hasn't caused enough death and destruction. Israel herds the Gazan population back and forth like sheep. With Israel's complete takeover of the strip, what will befall this population now? Already suffering from starvation, disease, and displacement.
Israel itself is suffering, and many in Israel want their hostages home and an end to the war. The war is costing Israel not only financially but in dead and injured Israeli soldiers. Already, reportedly, 100,000 IDF operatives have PTSD. Netanyahu is dragging Israel into hell as it occupies the whole of Gaza. Hamas will keep resisting, and as many leaders or fighters the IDF kill, more spring up in their place. For all of Israel's powerful military and all the harm Israel brought to Gaza, Hamas is an implacable enemy. Any scholar of Vietnam and Afghanistan will tell you that major powers do not win against a determined, asymmetric, guerrilla army. Now that Israel, or rather the far-right administration in Jerusalem, has committed to full occupation of Gaza, this will now be a war with no exit strategy. And as the US found out in Vietnam and more recently in Afghanistan, it does not bode well.

In a world where tariffs, trade wars, and “America First” rhetoric reshaped global commerce, Europe and South America are signaling that they want stability, predictability, and diversification—before geopolitical shocks force their hand again. Why the Trump Era Still Shapes Global Trade Even years after leaving office, Donald Trump’s approach to trade continues to influence global economic planning. His presidency normalized aggressive tariffs, skepticism toward multilateral agreements, and a willingness to weaponize trade for political goals. With Trump once again a central figure in U.S. politics, governments around the world are preparing for renewed uncertainty. For the EU, the lesson was clear: overdependence on any single market—especially the United States—creates vulnerability. For South American economies long reliant on commodity exports and limited trade partners, the risk is even greater. The EU–Mercosur pact is, in many ways, a hedge against a future where access to the U.S. market becomes more restricted or unpredictable. What the EU–Mercosur Agreement Promises At its core, the agreement aims to eliminate tariffs on more than 90% of goods traded between the two regions. European exporters—particularly carmakers, machinery producers, and pharmaceutical companies—stand to gain improved access to South American markets. In return, Mercosur countries would benefit from easier entry for agricultural exports such as beef, soy, sugar, and poultry into Europe. Beyond tariffs, the pact includes provisions on: Rules of origin, making it easier for businesses to qualify for preferential treatment Public procurement, opening government contracts to foreign companies Intellectual property protections, important for European brands Sustainable development commitments, including labor rights and environmental standards Supporters argue that this combination creates a modern, rules-based trade framework that strengthens both regions economically and politically. The Environmental and Political Backlash Despite its economic promise, the agreement remains controversial—especially in Europe. Environmental groups and some EU member states argue that increased agricultural exports from South America could accelerate deforestation in the Amazon. French farmers, in particular, fear being undercut by cheaper South American beef produced under looser environmental and animal welfare standards. These concerns stalled ratification for years. What has changed now is political urgency. European leaders increasingly view the pact as a strategic necessity, even if it requires side agreements, enforcement mechanisms, or sustainability add-ons to address critics. In short, geopolitical pressure is outweighing political hesitation. South America’s Strategic Calculation For Mercosur nations, the deal is about more than trade—it’s about relevance. South America has often found itself caught between major powers: the United States, China, and the European Union. By deepening ties with Europe, Mercosur countries gain leverage, diversification, and access to technology and investment. Brazil, the bloc’s largest economy, sees the pact as a way to modernize its industrial base and attract European capital. Argentina, struggling with inflation and debt, hopes expanded exports will stabilize its economy. Smaller members like Uruguay and Paraguay view the agreement as a gateway to global markets they otherwise struggle to reach. Importantly, the pact also reduces overreliance on China, which has become South America’s dominant trading partner over the past decade. A Message to Washington While no official statement names the United States, the message is unmistakable. Europe and South America are preparing for a world where U.S. trade policy may once again turn inward. By locking in long-term access to each other’s markets, they are insulating themselves from sudden tariff shocks or political bargaining. This doesn’t mean cutting ties with the U.S.—far from it. Instead, it reflects a broader shift toward a multipolar trade system, where regions rely less on a single economic superpower. If Trump-era policies return, Washington may find that its traditional partners have already adapted. Challenges Still Ahead Sealing the deal politically is not the same as implementing it smoothly. Ratification still requires approval from EU institutions and member states, some of which remain skeptical. Monitoring environmental commitments will be crucial, as failure could reignite opposition and undermine public trust. There is also the risk that domestic politics—on either side of the Atlantic—could derail progress. Elections, leadership changes, and economic downturns all have the power to slow or reshape the agreement. Yet compared to previous years, momentum now appears stronger than resistance. What This Means for Global Trade If finalized, the EU–Mercosur pact would be one of the largest trade agreements in history. More importantly, it would signal that multilateral trade deals are not dead—even in an era of nationalism and protectionism. For businesses, it means new supply chains and investment opportunities. For governments, it offers a template for balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility. And for the global system, it represents a quiet but firm pushback against trade isolationism. Final Thoughts Europe and South America sealing a trade pact for the Trump era is not about the past—it’s about the future. If I were asked to remark on my life and the childhood that paved some road leading me to this point, I would have to say something about all the funny people who surrounded me for the last 26,872 days (and counting). Somewhere along that road, I became a big fan of laughter and the comedy that spawns it – and, I mean not only my own laughter, but the laughter of others, some of which I have actually been responsible for inducing.
