Democratic Party Victory.

A Smack in The Face for Trump.

Nuuk: Greenland's capital.

In the Greenland general election, the Democratic Party won. The party will now look to forming a coalition government. The party got 30% of the popular vote. The right of centre party prefers a slow path to independence.

Its leader, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, told Sky News the victory is a warning to Trump. Not to meddle in Greenland affairs. He said, "We don't want to be Americans. No, we don't want to be Danes. We want to be Greenlanders. And, we want our independence in the future. And, we want to build our own country".

Trump promised Greenlanders "billions of Dollars" in investment, telling them he would "make them rich". With Trump looming over the largest island in the world, this has been an important election for Greenland. The second largest party in the territory Naheraq made gains in the election. They would like a quicker move to self-rule. Ms. Olsen, a candidate for the party, told Sky News that Trump's designs on Greenland had helped her party. She stated, "It's making us aware we are worth more than what the Danish people have been telling us for 300 years, maybe we can stand on our own two feet". While some Greenlanders may want to become Americans, thinking of the financial benefits, many do not.

Ms. Olsen said "Greenland would not swap 300 years of colonialism under Denmark for more of the same under the US". Another issue that determined votes in Greenland is inadequate health care. Cancer is a big concern for Greenlanders.

Greenland is 89% Inuit, while 7% are Danes, other Europeans and Americans. Immigration has poured in from Thailand, the Philippines, and China.

Why does Trump wish to annex Greenland when it already has a military base there? For Trump, however, it's not just about the Chinese and Russians, it's about exploiting the island's resources. Trump being a businessman wants to access Greenland's resources. Other nations also want to tap into this and have been trying for decades. However, Canada, China, and Australia's attempts have all been rebuffed. If Greenland allowed those resources to be exploited, there would be a concern.

Greenland's infrastructure would need more roads to make accessing these resources possible. Also, the Arctic climate would be a problem. How would Greenlanders be affected? What about Greenland's wildlife struggling to adapt to climate change? Would Greenland see any financial gain from this foreign activity?

Trump talks like a neo-imperialist, as yesterday he spoke of no border between the US and Greenland. Trump wants to rule Greenland, Canada, and that's just for starters. He has identified Mexico's drug cartels as terrorists and he may intervene. Trump wants to own the Panama Canal whether Panamanians like it or not. Trump said America's enemies like China use this canal to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic. China has designs on the waterway itself, according to Trump. While there may be some truth to what Trump says, the president has Dollar signs in his eyes. Trump controlling the canal is all about America's prosperity.

Denmark has rebuffed Trump's overtures to own Greenland. Trump offered to buy the territory. The Danish Prime Minister told Trump what he could do with that offer. So would Trump use military action to conquer and own Greenland? Nothing can be put past this tempestuous American President. Denmark would deploy its navy but would be no match for US forces. Other European forces might assist Denmark in such a case.

So, could we see a full-blown war between Europe and the US, over this? Given Trump's mind, as incredible as it sounds, a conflict between the US and Europe, wouldn't surprise me!

Meanwhile Greenland wants to take its place among all independent nations. Like the Palestinians, Tibetans, etc, who dream of freedom, why shouldn't Greenland also desire this?
