David Cameron: Lasting Ceasefire.

Lord Cameron and German Foreign Minister Article.

David Cameron: Foreign Secretary.

David Cameron and his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, wrote that a lasting ceasefire should be what Israel and Palestine, should be aiming for.

In the Sunday Times, Cameron and Baerbock said, that this ceasefire, cannot just be "an end to the fighting". Cameron and Baerbock agreed that: "It must be lasting for days, years, and generations". We, therefore can support a ceasefire, but only if it is sustainable".

Both Foreign Ministers said Israel had the right to defend itself, but too many civilians had died in the conflict. Cameron's and Barebock's article comes on the coattails of President Biden calling for a scaling back of Israel's operations. Biden called for, Israel to be more targeted in its operation of trying to route out, Hamas. It would seem the US and Israel, have different ideas, about what comes after the war. Netanyahu has said, that if it eliminates Hamas, they want to defacto control, Gaza's security. The thing is Israel seems to have killed more civilians than Hamas leaders or operatives. 20,000 Civilians now lie dead. God knows how many more lie under the rubble of Gaza. Hamas has an estimated, 30,000 fighters. Israel estimates, at most, says it has eliminated 3 - 5,000 Hamas fighters and leaders. So, that means, Hamas is still out there and inflicting death and destruction on the IDF. No one knows, how many IDF operatives, have died, but it must be nearly a thousand. As in Ukraine with Russian Officers dying, in Gaza, IDF Officers, some of them high-ranking, have paid the price.

Israel probably will conquer Gaza, completely, hence it saying the operation may take months. It would seem, that Hamas, love them or hate them, has given the IDF, a tough fight. Gaza is an overcrowded sprawl with 2 million people packed into a 25-mile-long piece of land. Urban warfare, is deadly and dangerous, for both sides. No doubt, the squads of men and women from the IDF, will have trained in simulation urban warfare. So, they will know how to react to the environment they are in. The thing is though, how good is their training? Even one of the best well-armed and well-trained forces in the world can come unstuck or realize real urban warfare is deadlier than simulations.

Hamas for its part will be fighting against a more powerful and better- armed enemy. Therefore, their warfare, will be a guerilla campaign, of hit and run. Of setting ambushes, IEDS, popping up from tunnels and surprising their enemy. Their strategy will be like the Viet-Cong, the Taliban, like any insurgent movement facing a stronger force. Of course, Israel will have their GPS maps, but Hamas will know the areas of combat, like the back of their hands. Both forces will be fighting with a strong belief, they are fighting, for their people and country. That will give the IDF and Hamas greater courage to prosecute this conflict, to the end.

Obviously, the outcome of the war will look much different to both sides. For Israel, it is the elimination, of the Hamas - period. And maybe driving the Gazans into Sinai, Egypt, allowing of course. Israel will want to take control of the Gaza Strip, at least that's what Netanyahu, has indicated. That is what victory will look like for Israel. However, Israel may be ruling a vengeful population. Who will still organise resistance to the IDF? If the death toll of IDF operatives gets too much, will Israel, long term, want the headache of Gaza?

Victory for Hamas, will be to survive, the destructive onslaught of the Israeli war machine. Despite Gaza being pummeled to rubble, its infrastructure wrecked, with thousands dead, if Hamas is still standing and intact, Hamas will regard it as a win.
