Corbyn: The Second Coming?

A New Party in The Offing?

By Nicholas BishopPublished 6 months ago 3 min read
Mr. Corbyn.

When Mr. Corbyn lost the general election against Bojo and the Tories, many thought Jeremy Corbyn's bid for leadership and power was over. Mr. Corbyn stayed on as the leader of the Labour Party until a new leader was chosen. Sir Keir Starmer, once an ally of Corbyn in his shadow cabinet, booted the veteran left-winger out of the party once he became leader. He sought to eliminate alleged anti-Semites from the party that had allegedly had their moment in the sun under Jeremy Corbyn.

As Sir Keir was voted into power last year, Mr. Corbyn had become a back- bench MP once more. During the general election, a Starmerite candidate was put up against Mr. Corbyn in his Islington constituency. However, Jeremy was returned to parliament as an independent MP.

Starmer as leader and Prime Minister has dragged the Labour Party to the centre ground. Some even say he has moved to the right with Trump in power in the USA and right-wing leaders in Europe, such as Giorgia Meloni. And, the threat of Nigel Farage and Reform UK at home.

If Mr. Corbyn does launch a new party, Sir Keir and his team will dismiss it as a hiding to nowhere. He will say this is why people like Corbyn do not belong in the Labour Party. This is why he will say I had to change Labour and make it electable again.

However, many people have fallen out of love with Sir Keir and his policies. Targeting farmers, pensioners, and those on welfare has made him very unpopular with many people. Many could turn to Mr. Corbyn's new party, especially those on the left. Who would see Mr. Corbyn's party as truly being socialist and not a set of blue Labourites? The same as right-wing voters or those disillusioned by Kemi Badenoch, the current leader of the Tories, flocking to Farage and Reform UK.

The Conservatives have been knocked for 6 by the rise of Reform UK. Some say the Conservatives are a dying party, on life support. Could a new party on the left affect the Labour Party in the same way? Mr. Corbyn is in negotiations about forming and launching this party. He said this party, when or if it comes to fruition, will bring "Real change".

Coventry MP Zarah Sultana, 31, announced she was leaving the Labour Party. To form a new party with Jeremy Corbyn. However, Mr. Corbyn's colleagues in his former shadow cabinet, like John McDonnell and Diane Abbott, poured cold water on Ms. Sultana's announcement. They said they would not be leaving the Labour Party or joining a new party on the left. Others said Ms. Zultana had jumped the gun in announcing this. Even Jeremy Corbyn seems to have been taken aback. Ms. Sultana announced that this new party would be co-led by her and Mr. Corbyn. Some said she had broken ranks to get sponsorship and donations fixed for the setup of a new party.

Jeremy Corbyn may not even launch a new party. It would appear he is testing the ground with the public, negotiating with others to see if a new party would be worth launching. If there is a call for a new party on the left. Mr. Corbyn will be mindful of that other veteran left-winger, George Galloway. When he launched the Workers Party of Britain. This party was going to be a threat to Labour just as Reform UK is to the Tories. Mr. Galloway was elected to parliament, and the new party seemed to be on its way. With a plethora of candidates.

However, come the general election, Labour won back the seat Mr. Galloway occupied. You do not hear of the WPB now. Whether it is still around or not cannot be said. Mr. Galloway has returned to his show, MOATS or Mother of All Talk Shows.

As regards Jeremy Corbyn, Zarah Sultana, and a new party on the left, we'll watch this space.
