Andy Burnham: Explaing Putting His Case.

Andy Burnham has poured cold water on the Labour Party, asking him to remain loyal to Sir Keir Starmer. Mr. Burnham said it's all well and good, "demanding simplistic statements of loyalty", saying that they do not realise or have any understanding of how much "peril the Labour Party is in".

Mr. Burnham clarified that he is currently the Mayor of Greater Manchester and that his recent interventions were not about his "personal ambition". It was more about starting an open debate about the direction in which the Labour government is currently headed. Mr. Burnham feels that the Labour Party is in so much peril that next year's devolved and local elections could be catastrophic for the party.

In the lead-up to Labour's Annual Conference in Liverpool, Mr. Burnham said Sir Keir had no vision for the country. Mr. Burnham set out his policy proposals, which in reality seem to be an alternative vision for Britain as opposed to Mr. Starmer's vision or lack thereof.

This has added more fuel to the fire that, at some point, Mr. Burnham will launch a leadership bid to directly challenge Sir Keir. Sir Keir has compared Andy to failed Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss. Although I haven't seen Mr. Burnham being followed by a lettuce! To understand this sentence, read up about Liz Truss's career and her attachment to lettuces.

At a fringe meeting of the Labour Party Conference, Mr. Burnham said, "I was clear in the interviews I gave last week, I wanted to launch a debate on the direction of the party and get a plan to beat Reform UK". Two polls this week revealed that if a general election were held today, Nigel Farage would be Prime Minister. Another poll also said that some Labour MPs and members do not want Sir Keir to contest the next general election.

Andy also attended a meeting about Proportional Representation or PR, saying that despite everything, he still wanted this government to work. Mr. Burnham received a rapturous applause, flanked by the media.

The question that has to be asked is whether Mr. Burnham is genuinely concerned about the direction of his party. Or is it a bid to put himself forward as an alternative to Sir Keir Starmer? Or a third possibility, a combination of both. Mr. Burnham sees himself as the only one who can change the direction of the Labour Party and combat Reform UK. The only way that Mr. Burnham can do that is to get himself elected back to Westminster. Then, once he is an MP, he can start the process of challenging Sir Keir for the leadership of the Labour Party.

Of course, all this speculation. Mr. Burham may see out his term as Mayor of Greater Manchester. Or if a seat becomes available, he could stand to get himself back to parliament. Ultimately, only Andy Burnham himself knows what he wants to do, or does he?

For Andy Burnham to be intervening in such a way, perhaps he has sensed his time has come or will present itself at some point. Andy Burnham has stood twice before to be Labour leader. But he has failed twice too, to become Labour leader. Even though he stepped down as an MP to become the Mayor of Greater Manchester, it seems he has never given up his dream of becoming Labour leader and eventually Prime Minister.

What the future holds for both Sir Keir and Andy Burnham cannot be known. One can guess or predict, but only time will tell what is in the political future of Messrs Burnham and Starmer.
