Dorian S Nakomoto is a quiet man. He just celebrated his 77th birthday and he lives a simple life in Los Angeles but in 2014 Nakomoto’s life would be upended all because of something called bitcoin. I'm not even sure Mr. Nakamoto had even heard of bitcoin until that day.
What exactly is bitcoin you may be asking yourself. Well it's considered the preeminent crypto currency in the world. The mystery of where it came from and who invented it remains a mystery to this day however.
It was the summer of 2008 when the domain name Bitcoin dot org was registered on line. No one even noticed. Two months would pass before a paper titled “Bitcoin: a peer to peer electronic cash system” would be passed around a cryptography mailing list. That's the first time the name S Nakomoto was ever linked to bitcoin. Who was this mysterious Satoshi Nakomoto? How did he come up with the idea for bitcoin and why did he disappear in 2011? The mystery would intrigue the world for decades.
It was 2:45 pm. It was one of those Perfect California days with no humidity and the sun high in the sky. Dorian S Nakomoto and his mother were on their way to one of their favorite sushi restaurants. He noticed a caravan of cars following them. When Nakomoto reached the restaurant he was confronted by a gang of newspaper reporters all firing off questions about bitcoin. It seems a huge mistake had been made. Dorian S Nakomoto had been mistakenly identified as the inventor of bitcoin. He denied this allegation of course and told the reporters that he had never even heard of bitcoin. The next several months of Nakomoto’s life would be intoleroble.
He was hounded by reporters from Newsweek and the Associated Press. All he could do was keep denying that he was the inventor of bitcoin. Nakamoto was just a 70 year old lonely quiet little man who lived with his mother in a quaint bungalow in a suburb of Los Angeles. At some point the FBI got involved and asked for a sample of Nakomoto’s handwriting. Seems like there were now several suspects being looked at including a man named Nick Szabo. Nick was a bitcoin expert who had created his own bitcoin called bit gold in the late nineties. In 2014 Nakomoto along with Szabo and 13 other suspects were all subjected to handwriting analysis. A team of linguistic experts came to one stunning conclusion. The similarities between Szabo and the bitcoin whitepaper was uncanny. They believed they had their man. Szabo vehemently denied those claims. Unfortunately he has since passed away so we may never know if Szabo was the real Nakomo.
Just a few days into 2009 the first block of bitcoin was mined. Then in 2010 the first purchase was made with bitcoin. A man in London bought some pizza. Over the next twenty years a total of 21 million coins would be released.
Bitcoin for all intents and purposes is traceless making it popular for drug trading on the internet black market.
Today bitcoins creator, whoever it may be, could be worth up to six billion dollars.
As for Dorian S Nakomoto...his mother has passed away...he’s pushing 80 alive and well still living in LA and still driving to his favorite sushi restaurant. Although his life has returned to the normal quiet that he is used too he will forever be linked to the mysterious bitcoin. As for Bitcoin...its doing well too. One bitcoin is worth more than ten thousand dollars today.
Of course conspiracy theorists have their own thoughts about bitcoin. Some believe it's a secret project of Google or perhaps an intelligence agency like the NSA. Still others believe bitcoin is just a trapdoor project which when it gets big enough, a party which has been lying silently in wait, will rise up and seize control of the huge fortune.
