The Evidence We Keep
Ken is Puerto Rican and grew up in the Bronx. He dreamed of becoming successful and having a great job in the greatest city in the world, but when he was 14, his parents moved the family to Florida where there would be a “better environment for raising kids.” They said this in Spanish, of course. Ken’s parents did not speak English well.

My Transition from the Army Part 2
Ok so…I left off with the movers, right? I will skip this part of the transition since most of us have moved at some point and know the stress, the damages, and the moving company not taking responsibility for said damages they unintentionally caused. Here is where the real issues started for me.

Hometown Hero
He walked into the clinic for his volunteer shift. He was the jack of all trades when he did the volunteer work for the clinic. It seemed like they never had enough hands to go around. He’d empty the trash, restock supplies for the nurses, and occasionally do his favorite part of the gig and that was talking up the patients. He also got to learn how to heal. Granted he didn’t have the medical training so he could volunteer to treat patients, but he could volunteer and learn all he could from the doctors and the nurses. He relished the opportunity. He never knew when he decided that he wanted to help people through medicine, but just always knew that is what he was supposed to do.

You have all probably been to my "Hometown"
Home town. What a funny phrase. Since I was a kid, I have been asked, "Where are you from? Where is your hometown?" I'll be honest, I've never really known how to answer that question. As a kid, I'd always countered the question with one of my own. "Are you asking me where I was born? Or the last place I lived". You see, I grew up as a military brat. I have lived in almost all fifty states, and if I haven't lived there officially, I have spent enough time going there to almost give me a residence.

The Umpire
My father, Robert Edmundo Perez, of Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico, son of Edmundo Perez, of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, has come a long way. He wasn’t born under a full moon or surrounded by a large group in celebration of his arrival, but he was brought into this life with genuine love. Love. It seems like a very simple concept that exists in life. Love encompasses many things. A will. A goal. A choice. A desire. Ganas.

Final Correspondence
The sound of the doorbell startled my steady hand causing a scribble on the letter ‘a’ I was writing. I let out a sigh, admiring my awkward checkmark looking symbol as I set the pen and black journal down on the table. My $20,000 contest-winning plan will have to wait until later. Rising from my chair and making my way to the front door I squint to see through the dark frosted glass. I could see the figure of a well-postured man, and it looked like he was wearing a uniform. Feeling my heart quicken, my steps increased to match the beat. Could it really be? But he’s home so early.
