I roused to the familiar sound of the rooster calling from the top of the barn. My eyes opened to see the dawn light pouring in through my bedroom window. I stretched out of bed and strolled to the window to see the empty pastures that would soon be covered in happily grazing cattle. It used to be Grandad’s job to put the cattle out, but now it was mine.

Bring Back the High-Waist Belt!
Whenever I hear about returning fashion trends, I hope and pray that these do not include the resurgence of low-rise jeans. That look was popular during my high-school days, which were entirely consumed with worrying about my stomach flab and constantly tugging at my belt loops until they broke. I know there must be a few people out there who would disagree with me, but in no world would I ever consider the muffin top - plumber-butt duo a good fashion trend! I was very glad when the low-rise waist quickly changed to the opposing high-waist option. But so common is it for us to bicker over pant rise. My favourite fashion trend does not focus so much on pants, but what goes on top! Some may think I’m a little unstable for wanting to see this trend return, but I just can’t deny my true love…

Why People are Disappointed with the "Little Black Book" Challenge
Vocal’s “Little Black Book” Challenge has by far been their largest and most successful challenge to date. With Vocal’s partnership with Moleskine, the challenge comprised of the largest $20,000 cash prize ever offered in the history of Vocal. Unsurprisingly, this attracted an enormous submission pool with no less than 12,488 entries. After the challenge portal closed, thousands of hopeful participants waited excitedly for the official announcement with hopes of their stories being recognized.

When people ask me who my favourite fantasy writer is, I proudly respond with N.K. Jemisin. Since I found her book “The Fifth Season” in 2016, I quickly fell in love with her writing style and her blatant disregard for the rules of writing (who says you can’t write 2nd person narration well?).

An Author's Legacy
Marcie pulled into the long-paved driveway of 1832 Westcastle Court and forced her Volkswagen into Park with a clunk. As she kicked the driver's door open with her foot, she dragged a loaded cardboard box across the center console and wrestled it out of the car with her. Blowing the black hairs out of her eyes, she set the box to rest on the hood of the car and began fishing through its contents.

Final Correspondence
The sound of the doorbell startled my steady hand causing a scribble on the letter ‘a’ I was writing. I let out a sigh, admiring my awkward checkmark looking symbol as I set the pen and black journal down on the table. My $20,000 contest-winning plan will have to wait until later. Rising from my chair and making my way to the front door I squint to see through the dark frosted glass. I could see the figure of a well-postured man, and it looked like he was wearing a uniform. Feeling my heart quicken, my steps increased to match the beat. Could it really be? But he’s home so early.

A Canadian Inspired Superbowl Sunday
Every year Superbowl Sunday is watched by millions of people around the world, and of course, no Superbowl Sunday is complete without food! This year, in honour of The Weeknd headlining the half-time show, we decided to theme our menu in honour of this occasion. The Weeknd is the first Canadian performer to ever headline the Superbowl half-time show, so it was only fitting to celebrate the day with some Canadian favourite dishes and drinks!

2000's Nostalgia
It’s a hot summer night in the year 2000. Mom and I just finished cleaning up dinner and I ask her if I can ride my bike up to the corner store like I do every Friday evening. She slips me a $5 bill from her wallet and tells me to be safe, make sure I look both ways before crossing the street. I give her a kiss goodbye and run out to the back shed to pull out my bright yellow mountain bike.

Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
When I was a child, I had a knack for reading and writing. It was simply an area that felt natural to me, and perhaps that was the trade-off for being completely numerically illiterate. Although growing up I was praised by my teachers and my family who continuously encouraged me to pursue writing in University, I resisted. Writing was something that came easy, it was something I could rely on to produce a great mark with little effort, it was never something I considered pursuing as a career choice.
