The Pen Story
This is The Pen Story. It’s an Army story. It’s actually my Army story, the one I pull out when the occasion calls for an Army story from my five years as an Army officer. My career was memorable, but mostly only for me and I can’t say my telling of its memorable bits works for everyone, but this one I can get to work most of the time.

Cold War
From 1946 to 1991 the United States, the Soviet Union, and its allies were imprisoned in a long and bitter war known as the Cold War. The Cold War was rooted in a war of attrition and the political stance of global influence between the Soviet Union and the United States after their temporary alliance following the 1945 German occupation. Historians disagree on a certain date, but it is widely believed that the war lasted from 1947, with Truman Doctrine, to 1991, with the dissolution of the USSR.

Canned Cake
I laid in bed exhausted from the nightmares that pledged my dreams and woke me once I finally manage to fall asleep. Today was going to be rough, I could already tell. I argued with myself on the best course of action, attempt to sleep more and face the nightmares in my dreams or get up and face the nightmares of my day.

Life as an Army Girlfriend
If you’ve stumbled across this, it’s probably because you’re experiencing the same thing, or at least something similar, that I am. It’s been 3 days since my boyfriend left for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. We dropped him off Monday, July 12, 2021, and he hopped on a bus Tuesday, July 13, 2021, to his home for the next 6 months. Basic training is only 2 months, but he’s also doing his 4 month schooling there as well. I knew that this day was coming, yet my heart still aches for him to be home with me. I’ve been preparing myself for this day since we found out his ship out date, but nothing can prepare you for that final goodbye or that final I love you.

Monster of the deep
I spent most of the 1990’s as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard, I was stationed in the Central Florida area the entire 8 years. This story comes from my time aboard the first ship I was stationed on out of boot camp. I was stationed on that ship for just over 3 years, it was a working class ship affectionately called a “black hull” due to the fact that the ship was painted black instead of the normal white that most of you are used to seeing on the news. This class of ship maintains the aids to navigation markers and buoys that mark the channels, shallow water, dangers to shipping, etc. We “black hull sailors” were a hard-working type that went relatively unknown to most.

The Founding Fathers
"To succeed, jump as quickly at opportunities as you do at conclusions." Benjamin Franklin said this in an effort to explain to people that they must take action as well as they assume things. One of the things that people assume is that the founding fathers would be disappointed in the America of today. On the surface, this seems true. Pick up any news report and you will find horror stories about what is happening in America. Political tensions are at an all time high. Poverty seems to be an endless struggle. The good that should be so prevalent in the world, the good that the founders fought for, seems to have vanished.

As a combat veteran, what shocking cultural practice did you encounter during your deployment?
I first learned about bacha bazi, though it wasn't called that, actually in Iraq. I was talking to a local Iraqi, one of our interpreters, about the Afghans and he called them “faggots”. I asked him why he said that and he told me that they have sex with little boys. I became confused and asked him what he meant. In response to my question, the interpreter became confused and just repeated, “They have sex with young boys.” He added, “They say, ’women are for mating, boys are for pleasure.’” When I asked him how he knew this, he said Afghans told him. It wasn’t for another 2 years when I would deploy to Afghanistan that I would understand what he meant.
