A Welcoming Surprise
We’re having our kitchen renovated and it’s currently unusable. Stripped to the bare bones. These renovation works are not something we can really afford but a necessary expense after we discovered the old gas stove was leaking, the kitchen sink was cracked and letting water into the bottom cupboard and the electric light switch gave me a shock every time I turned the light on or off.

Saved By The Bell…
I’m breaking the rules of this challenge off the bat, and if that disqualifies me than so be it. In fact at first I didn’t even intend to enter this particular challenge, and I’m probably not a good enough writer to win regardless. One thing I’m sure of is that in my hectic life as a single dad I don’t always take the time out of my day to something nice enough for someone to inspire a winning story anyway.

Finding Worth in a Lonely Corner
It was a warm Saturday afternoon, and the schoolyard was filled with the total energy of excited children and doting parents at the annual fundraising fair. I had arrived to support my youngest daughter, Mary, who was selling homemade cookies with her small group of friends. Mary wasn’t the most popular kid at school, but she had a tight-knit circle that meant the world to her. Watching her laugh and chat with her friends, I felt a sense of joy. Though not in the popular crowd, these girls had each other's backs through thick and thin, weathering the storms of peer pressure and the trials of growing up.

A Low Gas Meter
I pulled up to the gas station, with my wife in the passenger seat. We were just trying to get home after a long trip in our crowded van. As we pull up, I can't remember who said it, but one of us came upon the horrible realization that our funds were practically empty. We were about 2o miles away from home, and with our low funds, we probably wouldn't make it home.

Keep My Treasure Safe
Meeting my best friend was like two souls recognizing each other from a past life. The moment we met, you never would have known that we didn't grow up together. It was an instant connection of loud laughter and conversations that lasted well into the night. Looking at us, we were polar opposites; her dressed in black at all times, myself dressed head to toe in pink, the angriest highlighter you'd ever met. We met on a cold winter night in December, and by January, I was living in her apartment, partying and using together, working illicit jobs to pay the bills and keep ourselves high.

She gets me
I didn’t want to admit it right away, no one ever does, but deep down I knew she was right. We’d been friends for almost a decade and roommates for a couple years. She knew me like well loved book she read countless times. I started to open up more and more, like chapters unfolding before her. She knew before I allowed myself to know, based on observations vocal reflection and body movement alone. It’s not easy to admit you’re autistic as an adult, and it’s definitely not any easier to have someone else suggest you may be, either. It’s some weird territory you have to learn to walk in. Almost like you’re sand walking in the Dune universe, but with gravity that sucks you down and then pushes you away. She taught me how to walk through uncharted territory, to move the way I was resisting, and it never seemed out of place.
