What is metacognition? It's knowing what you're capable of. When I was in primary school, I felt that there was another me living in my body, which was always monitoring my every move and even I couldn't tell who I was. The other me that was monitoring myself was metacognition.

Metacognition is an ability that not all animals have, but only humans. It is because of metacognition that we are able to reflect, to examine ourselves.

Is there any other way? There is. That's metacognition. If only we could wake up our metacognition while swiping our phones and remind ourselves that indulging in short videos is an unproductive activity, our brains would know what to do next.

Given enough time, can you make your day productive? There are a lot of people who don't have this kind of experience, because they are dominated by their parents when they are young, dominated by their teachers when they grow up, and dominated by their bosses when they graduate, and they never have enough time for themselves.

If you quit your job, you'll suddenly have a lot of time on your hands, yet still make your days suck and unproductive. So how do you change that? Metacognition can help us out. At the beginning of each day, plan your day and then use metacognition to monitor yourself to complete tasks. If your mind wanders off, or you get caught up in something unimportant, it's time to remind yourself to get back on track. If you've been working for an hour, remind yourself to take a break and keep your energy levels up. The "little boss" who grows in his own body is metacognition.

How to improve metacognitive ability?

The ability to improve metacognition is meditation. Many young people laugh when they see this method, thinking that they are not monks, so why do they meditate? Meditation actually has a very important function. When we meditate for 10 minutes a day, we become smarter, because meditation increases the number of folds in the surface of the brain, which improves memory and concentration.

Meditation is not difficult at all. We don't have to be like a monk, we just need to find a comfortable sitting position, close our eyes, and focus on breathing. If your attention runs out and you think of something else, it doesn't matter, just pull it back slowly. So when we wake up every day, 10 minutes of practice will improve our metacognitive ability.

Interest is the best teacher
