Samedi
You would’ve thought the whole town was in Davinas backyard. War drums pounding to wake her ancestors. The yard shimmered with moonlight, making the dew on the grass sparkle. Four drummers on the left of the yard and four on the right. Two women danced surrounding the fire in conjur magic. There movements mocked the flames or it may have been the other way around. Joe was one of the tallest people she’d ever met and the towns most gifted Rootworker. Like a giant he stood 6’7 in the center of the yard with his famous saxophone playing Muddy Waters famous “Got my mojo working.” White paint dripping from his face, a red serpent along his forehead and bones ringing on both wrists. Tonight was a full moon and was perfect for the ritual. White sheets of cloth dances around the whole yard. Davinas skirt moved back and forth in the breeze.

The Red Dress
The water ran hotly my skin was turning pink under the streaks of red staining it. It seemed my world was covered in reds and pinks tonight; red dress, pink water, red grotesquely streaking up and down my arms and legs, and pinking skin as I washed the mark of death from my body. Not for the first time and certainly not for the last, but this time it is different, this time it was personal in a way I had never known. Lightning lit up the shower ominously and thunder rolled as if nature itself cried out at the violence that had taken place. As I scrubbed away the night from my body, my mind wandered back up the hill and to the dead body lying alone on a porch in the rain.

In The Light We Must Stay
6:02pm. I wake. My apartment. What a mess. I remember when it used to be clean. When it used to be a happy place. A place I didn’t mind living in. Now it’s a prison. A hole. A hole I’ve dug myself into and no matter how hard I try to get out I simply can’t...

Near Death
The light passed from one eye to the next. Enchanted moonlight gave the feel of bliss. The yellow butterfly flew through the west. I knew he looked down below at the family that he missed. Almost 3 decades gone in just a moment. I never imagined the time and the memories that he had missed. I always felt the disconnect from the ones that he had met. I always felt left out from everyone’s gift. They all met him in some dreams, a gift from beyond. But there was me who never had the gift. No dreams, no talking from beyond. I just kept thinking that I wasn’t special enough.

Its High Time We Addressed Mental Health Issues Among The Under 30 Generations
It would be an understatement to say that the Covid pandemic has had a deleterious impact on our physical as well as psychological well being. Some of us lost our loved ones and most of us have had at least one or more of our relatives, peers, coworkers, or college maters and professional contacts succumb to the virus. This has led to grief and trauma amongst us as the “loss” of our near and dear, coupled with the circumstances in which they left us, made its mark on our mental health. Added to this is the endless restrictions on physical movement, including travel both domestic and foreign, that limited our ability to visit immediate and extended families, as well forced us into “isolation” hampered our innate sense of connection.

Using Mindfulness To Manage Toxic Thoughts
‘Wherever you are, be there totally.’ — Eckhart Tolle Some days, meditation can seem like a chore. It can feel like you are totally out of focus for the entire session. That your mind is wandering out of control, and it is all you can do to stop yourself from getting off the mat and ending the session early. Perhaps you are plagued by embarrassing memories, find yourself bombarded by strong emotions, or are simply falling asleep. Whatever the reason, that meditation session just sucked. Please do not stress, this happens to everyone. It is not a sign of regression, or that you are meditating incorrectly. The truth is that you can only have the meditation you are having. Whatever happens, happens and that is okay.

The Mirror
She stood in front of me, I towered over her. I could swallow her whole and she wouldn’t even notice. Her hands aggressively pulled on her skin, squeezing the flesh between her fingers. Her pale skin left the imprint of her red fingertips, glaring at me for giving her such a monstrous body. I tried to apologize for the way I made her feel but she wouldn’t have it and went on struggling to make herself presentable for the day.
