A Lost Trait In Today's World

What We Lose When We Are So Focused On Being Right

Top Story - September 2025

We have a lot of "Experts" in Our World Today...

Or at least Self-Proclaimed Experts, which many may or may not agree with.

The thing about Being an Expert...

There is this Desire, or perhaps Eagerness, to be Right.

Everyone...

All the Time...

Seems to be on a Mission to Prove they are Right.

In Many Ways...

It Seems to be the Defining Trait of Social Media in Today's World.

I'm Right...

They're Wrong...

If You Listen to them You're Dumb...

Only Listen to what I have to Say.

And Ok...

Maybe You Do have something to Say...

And Maybe You are Right...

But in Our Desire to Be Right About Everything All the Time...

We as a Society Seem to have Lost something Important...

Understanding.

It is a Lost Trait in Our World Today.

We are So Busy Proving Ourselves to Be Right and Masterful and Knowledgeable...

That We have Lost the Reality of "Why" those are Important in the First Place.

Being Right, Masterful, and Knowledgeable is Only Important...

If...

You can Use that Information to Help People.

Real People.

With Real Problems...

And Real Struggles.

But When We Make Everything About "Us" Being "Right"...

There is No Room for Others.

We Fail to Understand the People We are Supposed to Serve.

To Help.

To Guide.

It Does Not Really Matter to the Individual if You are Right...

If You Fail to Understand Them.

There is a Great Line from the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi...

"Grant that I may not so much seek...To be understood as to understand..."

What this is getting at...

Is that there is Power in Seeking to Understand Others "More" than there is in Being Understood.

President Theodore Roosevelt put it another way...

"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

You cannot Demonstrate Care if You Do Not Understand Others...

And if You Do Not Understand Others...

People Do Not Care How Much You Know.

You could be the Smartest Individual in the Universe...

And have All the Right Answers...

But it Does Not Matter if You Fail to Understand Others.

You Further Cannot Understand Others if You are the Focus of Everything.

Yes, it is Good to have a Healthy Self-Esteem in Life...

It is Good to Know and Own Your Worth...

But You Must also Know and Understand the Worth of Others.

We Seem to have Forgotten that it is Not All About Us.

In Fact...

We, as Humans, are Unable to Operate at Our Own Potential if We Make It about Only Ourselves.

Why?

Interdependence.

To Find Our Greatest Potential...

We Must Work "With" Others...

Our Weaknesses Must Be Aided by Others' Strengths.

When Our Focus is Only on Ourselves...

And Focused Only On Our Strengths...

We Fail to Acknowledge Our Weaknesses...

And How We can Be Lifted with the Strengths of Others.

It is actually Worse than this, because in Our Need to Be Right...

We Deny the Ability to Be Wrong or Weak...

And Deny Ourselves the Right to be Human.

Instead, We Subconsciously Force Ourselves into Designing a "Mask" of Perfection to the World...

While Hiding the Truth in the Shadows...

Hoping that No One will Ever See Our Weaknesses.

But it is There in the Shadows where We Ironically Condemn Ourselves to Exist.

Never Fully Being Ourselves...

Never Reaching Our Potential...

Always Hiding and Revealing Only What "Appears" Perfect...

But Always Held Back by Our Fears.

We become So Busy Hiding...

That We Do Not Even See the Solution...

Recognizing that We are Human...

That We Do Have Faults...

And that We Need to Understand Others to Rise Above Our Faults.

What will Take You Far in Life...

Is Deep Understanding of Others...

Their Strengths...

Their Fears...

Their Needs...

It is Through These that We Learn and Connect with Others...

And that Becomes the Key to Success.

Absolutely agree. Knowledge without empathy doesn’t serve anyone. We rise higher when we understand and uplift others.

It's important that we learn from all sides of life in order to understand ourselves. Then we can use it to to better the world and help others. The fact is, nobody is right and nobody is wrong because we all think in different ways. A well written and thought provoking piece Cody. Congratulations on Top Story!
