I Don't Drink for Taste
I've never been a big drinker. That's always been amazing to me, considering how many alcoholics I've known and am related to. I definitely did the thing where you almost drink yourself to death until you turn 21 and then basically stop completely because drinking legally literally took all the fun out of it. When I was 17 and 18, anytime I had the opportunity to drink I got so wasted. Not just white girl wasted either. I was too cool for mixed drinks (which means I couldn't stomach them). So when I wasn't drinking beer, I chugged bourbon from the bottle (because for some ridiculous reason chasing it with a beer seemed like a great idea). But like I said, I didn't carry on this way for too long. The older I got, the more I just wanted to sit and relax with a nice cold beer when hanging out with friends.

Amazing Wine Country Destinations Across America
Wine. One of my most favorite topics to discuss. Seeing it, holding it, tasting it, feeling it. You name it, I love it. While I have ventured out to many wineries in New Jersey—heck, I even got married at one—I still have much wine exploring to do on my bucket list. Of course, I have a few international wine destinations like Italy and France, but I would be just as lucky to visit one of America's wineries, as they have some of the best tasting grapes in the world. From New York and Virginia's rolling hills to the breathtaking, sun-kissed views of California and everywhere in between, the US is full of award-winning, amazing wine country destinations that are just waiting for my visit. On top of that, even if the wine tours don't have your taste buds rejoicing in flavor, at least you get to sit back and relax, sniff, swirl, and try different wines. Who knows, hopefully you can get yourself a nice little buzz to take home with you. Responsibly that is.

Although I have been sober for 23 years, I still go to self-help meetings to address my alcoholism. I know they give me the strength and spirituality I need to stay sober. Over the years I have come to learn there are three main components needed to stay sober. They are honesty, motivation and support, but the most vital one needed to get and remain sober is honesty.

In Defence of Drinking Alone
Before we begin, a disclaimer: I am not a health blogger. I regularly eat chocolate chip cookies for breakfast, and I think Tortilla Chips with cheese on them is a completely acceptable meal to eat in bed. I will not ever be the person you come to for tips on the 5:2 diet, and I roll my eyes whenever I hear the phrase ‘gluten-free.’ I sometimes eat salad, I often eat cheese, and when my friends text me incessantly enough I go to spin classes and complain the entire time. I do not understand quinoa, and I will throw things at you if you call any food ‘super.’ Also, wine is joy.

I guess the best way to start this is just to dive right in. My name’s Emily, I’m an alcoholic and I’m very open about it, which, to each their own it’s anonymous for a reason, I’m just not a good rule follower. I know for a fact that it catches people off guard when I offer up this little morsel about myself. How do I know? Because it’s usually followed by “really?!” (yes really, thanks for asking), or “Oh no you’re not!” (oh, but I am), or my favorite, “but you don’t look like an alcoholic!” (now tell me, what exactly does an alcoholic look like?).
