Rainbow Capitalism, which is the use of LGBTQIA+ issues as a means to further a corporate goal such as increasing revenue, or simply as a marketing ploy has been around for a surprisingly long time. With Early movers being Levi & Strauss, IBM, Absolut Vodka and Subaru starting their campaigns in the 60s, 70s and 80s respectively. These companies did something that was undoubtedly unpopular, this wasn’t a populist move or simply “moving with the tide” they were genuinely going out of their way to target a demographic who was taboo and demonised especially during the AIDS Crisis. Most of these companies have retained an ironclad commitment to the LGBTQIA+ Community and have, with all things considered, remained a firm Ally to the cause.

Introducing the idea of re-entering into a norm that has been left behind will immediately be shot down. As the realization sets in that the field they are in is eerily similar to the field that they left. Slowly but surely the yard just over the mountain begins to look much more appealing. If the treatment, disappointment, and risk of embarrassment are the same, what keeps someone standing in place when walking away is the better option? The answer sits in the maintenance of a perception and the reassurance the Renegade brings to the group. Becoming a leader of any Taboo ideal takes the leader from self-interest to furthering the causes of the group. It begins with strong advocacy and support for a form or freedom, or expression, an audacity to support the under-dog.

I must admit, I’m not a loyal or well-versed attender to Beyonce’s music. I don't know every song; I don't even know every album. However, as a public and frequent listener to her songs that I like, I have been allowed to speak on her as if I were an expert. I was recently asked which of her albums is worth listening to in its entirety. Of course, I qualified my opinion by explaining my lack of knowledge and general distaste for idolatry and icons, my disdain at her billionaire status, and how my relationship with her music is “tenuous, at best.” Ultimately, I had an answer and offered that Renaissance is that album.
