A New Age in Children's TV
TV shows are taking modern culture by storm. As a child, I remember waking up early, turning on the TV, and watching whatever Dish TV was playing on Cartoon Network that morning. Usually, that meant Dora the Explorer or Spongebob Squarepants before my mom drove me and my brothers to school. To be fair, I am currently 20 years old, and may not have some of the same early television experiences as my fellow Creators.

Acknowledging That Systemic Racism & Homophobia Exists: ‘Systemic racism’ is defined as the form of racism that is embedded through laws and regulations within a society, social group/s and or an organisation. When left unchecked, identified and removed, it leads to such issues as discrimination, criminal injustice, illegal & unfair employment practices, abuse of power, mis-information in areas such as education & healthcare among other problems for communities, cities and societies. ‘Homophobia’ can be defined as a very strong and extremely irrational aversion to people who are from the LGBTQi+ Community, who identify as gay/bisexual/queer etc.

On the Merits of Being Out
This essay was previously published on the website Leatherati in 2015. I wrote it and hold all rights to the content. On November 1st, 2015, Mr. Hardy Haberman presented his keynote address, “Welcome to the War on Sex,” at Leather Fiesta, an annual celebratory and educational event for kinksters, held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In his powerful speech, Hardy claimed that now that the LGBT Rights campaign has been essentially won, those who fight us have moved on to the Transgender community as their next target. Our enemies’ goal? To instill fear into the hearts and minds of the American public. When they lose this battle, for they will lose this fight too, who will be next? Hardy predicts, and I agree with his assessment, that the next fight will be against leather folk, kinksters, and BDsM in general. With varied communities under our header, ranging from leather-clad gay men to dykes who ride on bikes, twinks in puppy gear to whip-wielding women who dominate men, and an environment that fosters openly pleasurable relationships between individuals of one, many, or no gender, individuals of differing orientations and with sexual proclivities that would shake the conservative base to the core, “they” will have much material with which to maintain the Puritanical status quo that sex is dirty, bodies are bad, and desires should be kept secret or expunged via criminal prosecution, brainwashing, or violence. Hardy offered a number of means with which we may combat this coming inquisition, and among these means was that we as a group need to be open. I have read and heard numerous diatribes from countless individuals who rail against being out for this reason and that, we all have. I am tired of hearing about all the things that we can’t do; that we are not supposed to do. I do not believe that outness is right for every person, but I am 100% out and open. I refuse to live in closets and I have had positive experiences as a result. Being out has been the best choice for me because it has given me a chance to break misconceptions, inspire those who are unsure, and protect our community.

Face the Rainbow
As previews once again flood my timeline for the upcoming 2nd season of The L Word: Generation Q, I am again faced with the glaring realization that even after increased diversity in media, the Black Live's Matter movement, and every queer space calling for "POC to the front", white washing in the LGBT community is still alive and kicking. From the appropriation of the term "stud" last year to literally having no representations of studs, black femmes, black trans folx and other black queers within mainstream shows, I am left wondering why we are still fighting for space and to be seen within our own community. Black queers have been undeniably out in the thick of advocating for rights within the community, the protest organizers, the one's who threw the brick, who started the riot and who influence the change. Stormé DeLarverie, known as "the stonewall lesbian", was a black lesbian singer and drag king who threw the first punch and started the uprising now known as the "Stonewall Riots" back in June of 1969. Followed by Marsha P. Johnson, a black transwoman and activist, who showed up promptly to the cookout and threw the first brick to fight back against the the violence, discrimination, and injustice of the NYPD. The Stonewall Riots are known to not only be the first Pride, but the events that lead to the gay liberation movement and the fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

Queer Lit to Read this Pride Month
I always knew I wanted to be a writer. When I first entered university I was an English student. I quickly left the department after realizing that literary criticism was not for me, but before I did I took a queer literature class. This list is compiled both from books that I read in that class, as well as books I have come across in my hunger for Canadian small-press works. From my experience reading queer lit, I have found that these stories tell a more representative and relatable account of what it means to exist in a body, to fall in love and have intimate, vulnerable experiences. Queer lit exists as not only a more accurate telling of a story, but often as a retelling of exclusionary past stories, as shown by Anne Carson’s work and Jordy Rosenberg’s work featured below.
