you'll look for me in your wedding photos
(so will i, though).

hey, bro.
how you feeling?
you called me at three in the morning, you know.
to say you’re getting married; um, that’s cool,
but why’d you call me so late?
(and tell me so soon?)
you just got engaged, right, I saw your instagram page
(aren’t we talking yesterday sort of engaged?)
i think I follow her account. ring emoji in captions,
you bought a nice one for her, it’s real bright and attractive.
was there something you were thinking about, when you called me last night?
haven’t seen you for two years now,
(is that right?)
naw bro, i’m good, i’m doing okay,
you wanna tell me about her?
(and why you called so late?)
just the shock of it, huh. makes sense, yeah I see,
glad I could be there for you. you excited?
(why me?)
it’s cause— oh, I remember that bet we made, late,
(or that night by the bonfire, when you touched my face).
it’ll be such a great wedding. yeah, i can’t wait,
what do you want from the registry?
(is she fate?)
i mean, i don’t remember much, got a few good memories,
(your face too close to mine, sharing breaths by the sea).
that night at St. Martha’s, that snowball fight on the beach,
oh god, weren’t we crazy?
(do you still want me?)
and yeah bro, i’d like a plus one, that okay?
she’s my type, you’ll like her,
(i’ll keep the longing at bay).
it’s been fun, i appreciate it. i’ll see you again soon,
i’ve missed you, my guy,
(have you missed me too?)
i guess the only thing left is college,
(your room)
"Remember my hand on the—"
(sheets)
"When you grinned—"
(what do we—)
"It’s been so great catching—"
(oh, messy hands, fervent hope)
"Do you remember Sophia?"
(the white line of your throat)
"What a fox, yeah. She’ll never —"
(want me)
"By the way, sorry I called, I was—"
(touch like doping)
"Naw, that’s alright. It’s stressful, sometimes."
(can we have this? just maybe, one—)
"Yeah, I know. It’ll be great."
"Are you happy?"
(eyes meeting)
"Thanks for picking up the phone. I’ll see you—"
(you’re leaving.)

Always love your stuff Amelia!
Your poem poignantly captures the complex emotions of reconnecting with an old friend and the unspoken feelings that linger. The alternating lines of dialogue and inner thoughts create a powerful contrast, adding depth and vulnerability to your piece. It's beautifully written and deeply moving.

Congrats on well deserved Top Story. I know these types of feelings very well.
Ooooh this was painful... I've been here before, it's not a pleasant feeling but you captured it so well. Thank you for sharing this emotionally visceral experience!

Nice work
Brilliantly done - love the way you splice the past with the present. So good.
Whoa, the back and forth between the past and now felt so real. You can almost feel the confusion and the unspoken feelings between the lines. Great job.
Love the intertwined silent thoughts. Empathically astute observational poetry. (Should be a form). Right up my street. 👍
This hit me right in the feels—bittersweet and beautifully tangled! Loved the mix of nostalgia, longing, and those unsaid moments. Brilliantly done!
