Within Shadows
Strength inside us - a tattoo challenge
Spread thin like ripples upon liquid skin
I drift upon the waters edge
Flowing outward with even pace
I hide behind this faceless face
Till stretched beyond all I know
A laugh in time, a smile for show
My ripples wash into the shade
Where shadows float before they fade
Mere shimmers of a hollow life
I slip away into the night
Waiting for dawns early light
Where suns first glow may tease the sky
And share false dreams in which I die
I know I’m more than just the grey
Concealed behind the light of day
My place is here
Just out of reach
Living beneath this waning sheet.
From this view
I see you
The one who cries and fears the night
And wanderers for the grace of light
I exist, so you fear not the gallows
I am the light within the Shadows.

Well-wrought, J! Lots of quotables here, and a great errant rhythm/rhyme scheme which flits about like the shadows cast off by those objects which obstruct the light! This works on many levels!
“Where shadows float before they fade” is just a fascinating line and image. I keep coming back to that one
It feels like a reminder that even in the darkest spaces, there’s still something alive, watching, waiting, even protecting. Thank you for sharing this!
