Winter Daybreak

frosted verse

By Andrea Corwin Published about a year ago 1 min read

Sol begins his breach of the morning

snow-laden clouds that are

huffing out huge hoary flakes

The orb glimmers and glows

pulsating in its climb, barely visible

behind the dense frozen blossoms

Rays burn gold, firing the sky

as the sun begins to crack open the day

White blinding landscape, deeply frosted,

sparkles in sun glints

No prints blemish the brilliant blanket

Falling wet fluff muffles all sound

Nothing stirs

Snow-draped gigantic firs stretch

to the silver-gray sky

Tall sentries,

their green tips cradling frozen crystals, and

evergreen arms laden in ice shards

sway to the rhythm of wintry gusts

Suddenly, the moon sets

and the forest sighs as a sharp

mountain gust blows through

The Steller’s jay chatters, eyeing an awakened

snowshoe hare kicking out of the snow,

while a chickadee sounds its

dee-dee-dee-dee alarm at the intruder

Oh my, Andrea. This was incredibly amazing. Reading this made all my senses tingle. The words were laid out and chosen wisely, to the point where it was smooth like butter. I love the pace, and I love how I both appreciated winter and experienced it as it was unfolding in your poem. My oh my, I'm speechless. 👏🤗💗

Well-wrought, especially your depiction of the birds and hare! I get the black-capped chickadees in my backyard, and must say they are fiercely territorial. I have a lamp-post for which they fight every spring with the house wrens for nesting. If I'm lucky enough to catch them at it, it's as amusing as a Loony Tune!

I love the nearly sterile environment you set up for us before announcing the intruder. Well done!

You really know how to evoke the wilds of winter in the great white north, Andi. Love the addition of the jay, hare and chickadee and your cover pic is absolutely spectacular!
