When What Was

Interrupts What Is

Now he only visits in her dreams

because that's where she left him

His memory pulls at the seams

inside a mist that's paper thin

Trying to expose the love

they did their best to cover

When life began to push and shove

dividing them as lovers

She looks back now and wonders

what life would be like if she'd stayed

Judging her book by the cover

there's so much she'd rearrange

But time has weighed and measured

what is past is doomed to stay

It's the memories she treasures

about the one that got away
