A Villanelle For Peace
Introduction
I don't know if Jimi Hendrix originated these words, but they are a real truth that should be pursued. I saw them sprayed onto a power box in Preston.
Those words inspired this villanelle.
The music is "May This Be Love", an absolute beauty from "Are You Experienced".
"Sine missione" is a Latin phrase that translates to "without mercy" or "without reprieve". In the context of Roman gladiatorial combat, it referred to fights where the defeated gladiator would not be spared, but instead would face death. Over time, "missio," the act of sparing a gladiator's life, became a more common practice, but "sine missione" was used to signify a fight where the outcome was final
I think the term Sine Missione" here indicates that love must overcome power.

I met Jason when I was five years old. I could say that I loved him from the moment I saw him. He was so handsome to me and I felt in awe by his presence. When they introduced him as the new kid in school, I wanted to be his friend right away. I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember his smile and how he didn't seem shy. He appeared confident and ready to learn. I waved at him and said "hello," before anyone else could even say a word. He sat next to me, and I asked him if he wanted to be friends. He looked so happy as he said, "Yes!"

Connecting Hendrixโs message to sine missione is a really thoughtful move turning an old term for no mercy into a kind of love that doesnโt back down. The poem has a steady, hopeful rhythm that sticks with you. Iโve been to the Hendrix memorial in Seattle too. Itโs a quiet, moving placeโand your words definitely carry some of that same spirit.
