Twiggy

peanut butter segue

Top Story - September 2024

it rhymed with truck

and it didn’t

but i was in a punt

(like teflon here)

a square nosed boat

made out of wood

flat bottom affair

no seats

no engine

just a stick

i argued with myself

and found

i was agitated

to a degree

to an extent

to a party

inside a small tent

the no smoking rule

was gleefully enforced

by sadistic zealots

no clubs

just a stick

the red car wouldn't idle

the stereo didn't work

half of the no signal

notification was blurred

pre-tuned to nothing

and that was what i heard

no static

no click

no hiss

just a stick It was at this point in time my mind wandered to the peanut butter sandwiches in my lunch box, not eaten at work today. I think I might be over peanut butter for a bit? This is sad as I enjoy peanut butter. The bread still soft to touch, sealed in an orange Tupperware lunch box that used to belong to one of my kids back in the day. It might be ok tomorrow, I’ll take it just in case:

  1. i might get hungry
  2. i might need something else to eat or,
  3. peanut butter sandwiches become a new currency overnight and i’m in at ground zero
  4. it’s just a stick

i found a small piece of tree

a very small piece of tree

not where it ought to be

on the ground in front of me

i had to just sit still and see

so i sat and i was be still

Twiggy was just Twiggy

not getting funky

not getting jiggy

this pot of tea

was getting cold

these parts of me

were getting old

i went to the cliffs

and inhaled an echo

waves of the near

and the far

rang through me

like a bell

i just wanted to see

see something see anything

see it maybe tease me with a trick

but it wasn't even a special branch

it was

just a stick

This is quite good, changing direction and flow, and sometimes chaotic, like a stream can be. Well done.

This is the type of form and flow that I expect the stream of consciousness poems to look like and you nailed it. Loved this! And cracked up at the pb sandwich becoming currency.

The absence of sound— “no static / no click / no hiss”—creates a poignant silence that underscores the poem's themes. Love this, Brenton! 💌
