Toilet Paper Roses

Do you remember toilet paper roses?
Red nail polish petals?
I ran out of green so the
stems had to be blue.
Notes written on paper towels?
Secret words well hidden
on something that may
eventually touch your lips
the way I wanted to.

Do you remember translated playlists?
I'd listen along because I already
knew the words to the song.
You'd close your eyes
when you sang and I would watch
your every blink.
Your smiles, your breathing...
That's when I knew I loved you, I think.

Do you remember back rubs that were
always OK because no one knew you and I
were actually gay.
Having you say all your body parts
in English was always amusing
because when you messed up
you'd scowl so beautifully
and blame me for losing.
--
I love you as much today as I did
when I presented you those flowers
the petals, the stem all came from
my heart and my love for you within.
If I could I would shower you with
real red roses but none of them
would measure up to you because
you are the rose of my heart
and I cherish you.

Day 4 of Quitting
If this is how sobriety feels, maybe it’s better to go through life a little buzzed… this, along with other hits like, I want to kill myself, I wish I was dead, and I’m going to throw myself off a bridge have been the only thoughts on rotation these past few days. I promise myself that if, in a month, I still feel like this (‘this’ meaning despondent, full of rage, and simultaneously numb) I can go back to smoking. Until mid-February though? Nicotine is off the table.
