In Greek legend, the royal couple Alcyone and Ceyx were transformed into kingfishers by the gods after Ceyx drowned at sea and Alcyone committed suicide in despair. This myth gave rise to the phrase "halcyon days," referring to the two-week period around the winter solstice when the god of the winds, Aeolus, calmed the seas so that kingfishers could nest safely, creating a peaceful, idyllic time.
