these future mornings of old
For Annie Kapur’s “A Day in the Life” Unofficial Challenge!

when a ray of morning sun shines upon my face
pressing a soft kiss of warmth to my temple
I know that day has come again
and what a blessing it is—
to stretch my legs
in a bed I will one day long for
to get to feel my body
throb and thrum and bend in its wake
I come alive like a sail, unfurling,
out of sleep,
so that I may bend and sway in the wind
however strong it may be
for one day more
and so I spread my arms to the sky
I stand, tall and proud,
before I bask in the beauty of my world
from my attic bedroom window,
imprinting my New York neighborhood
into my memory forevermore
