The Women Are Scared
A Poem
The women are scared.
And this fear lives between the heart
and the skin
that refuses to be held
despite its longing.
The women are trying.
But they fear their attempts at flirting
could be used as evidence,
so they diffuse the spark
that first drew him in.
The women are boring.
Because they do not know
how to let go.
Look at how she dances in the club
but freezes up from a man’s touch.
Because it starts small.
And once he sees a way in
He will take all that he can get
without asking.
Because he is deserving.
The women know that there are good men.
And that is what scares them.
Because it is sometimes impossible
to determine the difference
between a lover and a killer.
Both are passionate.
The women want passion.
And they want the safety
that allows them to be free.
To love wholeheartedly
and unlock the mind, soul and body.
But the mind is telling her to run.
And the soul is begging to be protected.
And the body is turning colder and colder
as the women get older and older
without a husband by their side,
despite many of them not having woken
from their dreams of being a wife.
The women are scared.
And they do not want to be scared anymore.
Oh, I think they would rather be in love.

This is so good. "The women know that there are good men. / And that is what scares them," and the next three lines following it encapsulate what is going on so well. Beautiful writing and powerful!
