There was once a toad
On Oxford road
And he was walking alone in the rain
But he saw a warm light
In the dark of the night
And people drinking champagne
So he knocked on the door
And remained on the floor
Until a young girl appeared
Her face was bright
From the hallway light
And down at the frog she peered
He asked to be let inside
Politely, and with pride
But the girl did not say a word
Instead she seemed scared
And she stood and she stared
But the toad remained unstirred
"Please let me partake,
I can see all the cake
And its raining like cats and dogs"
But the girl was unconvinced
And instead she winced
And she said this was no place for frogs
But the toad would not relent
And he began to repent
"You're the most beautiful girl I've ever seen!"
The girl stopped and thought
"But toad you're too short"
He wished she would not be mean
Then, like a magician
With a calm composition
He revealed a bouquet of flowers
The girl stood and smiled
Somewhat beguiled
And allowed the toad for two hours
He drank all the champagne
Simply could not refrain
And the girl grew rather upset
"Why toad -
Did you drink the whole load?"
As he began to fill with regret
"I got too excited,
Turning up uninvited,
To a house where I found romance"
He said he would right his wrong
But only as long
As she would give him another chance
That he could take her to dinner
Have an evening to win her
And maybe go out to dance?
She seemed mad to accept
And she wouldn't have except
The toad did have rather nice eyes
So he returned a day later
In a suit to date her
To embark on this new emprise
She wore a blue dress
And walked like a goddess
And the toad could not believe his fortune
They went out to eat
On a wonderful street
And had two great big portions
But after the food
She had changed her mood
"Do you know what I'd like?" She said.
She took the toad
Down the road
And they went into a shop instead
The evening was warm
The moon was on form
And they bought a bottle of wine
They found a nice seat
Somewhere discrete
And the evening grew rather fine
The toad looked at her face
In the quiet of that place
And he would never forget that sight
The curve of that nose
The cheeks and their rose
The wonderful smile so bright
Her smooth neck and its nape
Her body and its shape
And the taste on her lips of night
Her laugh and her voice
And his own effortless choice
To love her through dark and light
Then several years after
Their lives filled with laughter
The toad came with a love to impart
But to the house he had a key
And so did she
To both the lock, and each other's hearts
