The Things We Are Tired of Hearing

It's so exhausting to always put up with these kind of comments

When we have lost weight

"Oh my god! Why are you thin?"

"Don't you ever eat anything?"

"Don't go outside, the wind would blow you away!"

~~~~~
When we have gained weight
"Oh no, what happened to you? You were so thin before"
"I can stand behind you for shade"
"Why don't you go on a diet?"
~~~~~

When we eat less food

"Are you sure that's enough food for you?"

"You might as well don't eat if you're gonna eat that little"

"Here, use this saucer instead of a plate"

~~~~~
When we eat more food
"The food you're eating can feed a village"
"Have you not seen food before?"
"Wow, you sure can eat a lot!"
~~~~~

When we wake up late

"Looks like someone decided to wake up"

"Sleeping Beauty!"

"Such a lazy bum!"

~~~~~
When we wake up early
"What do you even do when you wake up early?"
"Why can't you sleep in on weekends and holidays?"
"I don't think you're getting enough sleep"
~~~~~
When we go out

"Don't you ever spend time at home?"

"You're using up so much money!"

"So irresponsible!"

~~~~~
When we stay at home
"Don't you ever go out?"
"You don't know how to enjoy life!"
"Oh wow, you must have saved up so much money!"
~~~~~

When we are a vegetarian

"Oh my God! What about your protein?"

"We are getting pizza. Not you. I'll get you grass"

"Why can't you eat like a normal person?"

~~~~~
Author's Notes:
I don't understand why is it so necessary for people to stick their noses into things that doesn't involve or harm them in any way.
Just let others live their lives according to their preferences.
    Very nice. It reminds me of Aesop’s fable about the donkey, the miller, and his son.
    I remember when I was told that. It was when I was thin. Through the eyes and lips of my Health and Social Care, teacher. I can stand behind you for shade 😲 oh that is just beyond rude. I was told that a man, by the man, deserves a woman with flat stomach. I am not sure how I got through that comment but... At least I get to experience terrible things on both sides. Use this saucer instead...wow. we might as well eat whoever says that. That way we would've eaten enough. Lazy for being tired. That's a new low. Gosh. We can't even go out. We are locked in a cage with vicious dogs. All these things said to us. Oh wow, you must've saved up so much money. Lol. Ain't that the point. Maybe we should go out more so they could complain too. The grass comment. Ugh!! Why are people like this. This was so relatable and you hit the nail right on the head with all that you've said 🤗❤️
  • Soooo true! You nailed it Dharr 👍 best work 🙏
    Hear, hear! I wish people would mind their own business, especially about others' eating habits.
    Major facts 💯 it's so annoying… especially when it's family.
    These questions should never be asked. A good way to release your pain writing these down.
    Reading this a second time... It makes me question... Did people actually say these things to you? Because if they did, how did you not throat punch them??? I love that this elicited emotions with me because that speaks to the relatability of this piece. But I hate that this is a thing society is so good at doing to us, especially as women!
    Interesting poem, Dharrsheena. It’s a nice commentary on how not only is it no one’s business what we do, but also how no matter which avenue we choose to go down, some will always find fault in it. I also liked your little “poem assistant” giving the definition of words you used that most of us wouldn’t have known. And the image of the teddy bear lying there reminded me of a poem I wrote honoring an old friend who died after we graduated high school. She hit a car head on and I used a black and white image of a teddy bear lying in the road alone.
  • I'm the sleeping beauty, lol. I can sleep my life away if I want to. I don't get why people feel the need to be so judgy. This is all spot on, and you did a great job capturing it! ❤️
  • Holly Pheni2 years ago
    Agreed -- the statements you listed, and many others! Why do people make themselves judges over others?
  • KJ Aartila2 years ago
    Very relatable - especially food comments have rendered me to a phobic state, at times!
    It’s it funny that no matter what some people always judge. This is so spot on! Years ago too when I went vegetarian a few friends would do this singing from “Weird Al” Yankovic “Don’t you forget about meat” it was funny at first but got old as they kept doing it every time I saw them. Flash to 15 years later and now they are both vegetarian! It’s felt ironic but make me think about the deep curiosity behind the judgement.
    People just love to criticize. It makes them feel better to push their insecurities onto someone else. It’s a reflection on their character, not yours. This piece illustrates that perfectly! 💖
    This is great!
    So so true! The sleeping in part got to me, haha! I’ve heard all of those lines. Doesn’t feel good to always be subject to critical comments or passive aggression when you don’t want them and certainly when they’re contradicting. I hope nothing too disheartening inspired this piece…💜
  • Lolololololololol ,,,,,, Great. Now this is reality. I love it. Fantastic job Dharrsheena. Keep it up.
    Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Damn.
    This one hit me. Growing up, I was teased for being chubby. In my twenties, I got my butt in gear and lost all of the weight and then some. People still commented on my weight, only now I wasn't "Too big" I was "Grossly skinny" Got old really quick. I developed a pretty severe eating disorder after it all and am still recovering. It's been a wild ride but it taught me to ignore the irrelevant opinions of those around me.
    Omg, yes!
    Dharrsheena, if anyone talks to you this way... send them my way! I'll show them what a sickening pop feels like. If you know what I mean! This poem was so powerful for me, it serves as a reminder that people love to complain and gossip. Nothing will even be satisfactory for anyone so if you do anything, do it for yourself because your opinion is the only one that matters! 💜
    It seems everyone is ready with criticism, yet so few are ready with compliments. Great remarks on culture- thank you for sharing!
