The Sweetest Dreams

And How I Remember It

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 7 months ago Updated 7 months ago 1 min read
Top Story - July 2025

Tired and frazzled, I crawled into bed

Restless from the stresses filling up in my head

Drifting off into slumber, I remember a time

When it all seemed so easy, when peacefulness was mine

I woke up to a shared room, both my sisters were there

And stepped out into a dream, like an answer to a prayer

I smelled breakfast in the kitchen, dad was singing a song

Mom was folding the laundry and singing along

There they were, my whole family, set in 70’s style

I wiped the tears from my eyes through a crooked tooth smile

It was just how I remembered, in burnt orange and green

Shag carpet and velour sofa with a fresh barnyard scene

No one said a word, like nothing skipped a beat

I helped clear the table, then did the chores in bare feet

The farm looked the same, that old barn still stood tall

It was the summer before that ol’ storm made it fall

It was so wonderfully overwhelming, that I began to cry

Mom and dad held me tightly, though they didn’t understand why

I could not let them go, I held them close to me

And the next thing I knew, I fell fast asleep

When I woke, I was home again, all alone in my room

The tears streaked my face, it was over too soon

How I wish I could visit that place every night

Just being thirteen again, when my world was right

Guess I’ll have to revisit in photos, until we meet again

My favorite part about memories is remembering the love that we had

There’s something so pure and aching in those memories, like a big hug from the past.

  • So tender and heartfelt. This brought tears to my eyes—what a beautiful tribute to family, memory, and the kind of love that never fades, even in dreams.

This was so tender and your words painted the perfect picture. The peace of youth oozed from the page. Well done.

Oh Kelli. This is gorgeous. Old photos and nostalgia... and so beautiful framed in words. Lovely!

Love this Kelli, and the rhyme feels so child-like too. We all wish we could be back as kids again sometimes, safe and secure and without the stresses of adult life! A nice reminder not to forget:)

Good job on this Kelli. I really like going back in time and looking at old polaroids even the ones when I was not even thought of yet. They all tell a story and your photo is really something else oh those 70's.

This line stood out for me: Guess I’ll have to revisit in photos, until we meet again. ( I find comfort looking at photos as well)

  • The wonder of such dreams & the ache they leave in their wake. I dreamt of my father (still alive at 91) the other night. He was old & frail, sitting on a couch. Then he went into a headstand which I thought was bizarre. But yours sounds beautiful.

  • And that's what memories should be made of. Beautiful!
