Southern Cross (A. Corwin screenshot)

Traveled Down Under

My personal mission

under the panorama of the

clear Fiji night sky was

to find the

Southern Cross among the stars.

It's never seen in the north,

where I live.

**

Sitting up on deck in

the middle of the sea

under a vast starscape,

so many constellations

above us could we see,

the Milky Way,

Orion with his belt of three stars,

The Dog Star

Taurus,

Cassiopeia

**

Suddenly,

There, there!

The Southern Cross

appeared on the screen.

Unable to find it

with my eyes,

among so many clusters,

and never having

viewed it...

Yet, technology

assisted my quest.

The phone app

outlined it and

I screenshot it.

Well-wrought! And thanks for giving me something to research! I found this interesting factoid about the cultural significance: "...myths from Indigenous peoples of Australia identifying the stars as part of a wedge-tailed eagle, an emu's head, or a group of trouble-making youngsters." Your pic gives me more the eagle vibe because of the way it's positioned, but the thought of trouble-making youngsters in the stars makes me chuckle!

Oh love this so much, Andrea! Well done. I love the stars and often look upwards...sometimes take that for granted, especailly in Scotland with all these clear skies we have at times. So, really resonated with this. Wonderful work and well done on Top Story! :)

  • Yayyyyy, you're back to writing! I've missed you! So happy that the app helped you see the constellation, it's beautiful! Loved your poem!

A middle of the sea sighting sounds so peaceful and soft. Wish I were there!
