The Simple Things
Holiday Reflections

When the late November snow
Wraps all in sparkling white
And the streets begin to glow
With multicolored light,
~
There's a glow that starts within
My tired, old heart, as well,
Warming, like a friendly grin
Or homemade caramel.
~
My mind returns to Grandma's
And sledding on the hill
How, before the meal, we'd pause
To give thanks for His will.
~
And the days of Christmas past
With family and friends
Learning how the gifts that last
Come from the time one spends
~
Just sharing joy with loved ones
And giving of ourselves,
Laughing at an uncle's puns
Or hiding elves on shelves,
~
Sampling Mom's best recipes
Prepared by her grandson,
Hide and seek or shopping sprees,
Or going for a run.
~
Simple things that we can share
For just a little while,
Leave impressions, sweet and rare
That later, bring a smile.
~
And that smile becomes the glow
That warms us to the core
When the Season comes, although
We're not close anymore.
~
Though the warmth that fills my heart
May make me shed a tear,
With its magic, I can start
The Holidays, this year.
~
Ready for the cold and snow,
The madness and the fun,
The lights, the food, the whole show,
Everything, everyone.
~
So, freed of all resentment,
I blink to clear the haze
And wish you warmth, contentment
And Happy Holidays!

Beautiful Dana! Happy Holidays to you!
This was beautiful Dana! I wish it were like the past; hard to make that happen when we get older and people live far away from one another or stop gathering for health issues, depression, and now politics. Such wondrous sentiments you shared, thank you.
This is beautiful. Thank you for this picture you painted with words...
This was so festive and wonderful! Loved your poem!
Wonderful poem! I love how the tone of this piece makes it sound like the lyrics to a Christmas song. The opening stanza really drew me in.
