Some of us must summon the bravery
To venture deep into the wilderness
To consult the gods, the better to see
What has caused their silent, strange bitterness

Our children are melancholy or mad
Our crops offer us no real nourishment
Our animals are diseased; their flesh, bad
Our spines buckle under discouragement

The old rituals and sacrifices
Seem to bore or disgust our deities
No prayer or entreaty suffices
Our king's soul is full of deformities

Do the gods stare at us with awful scorn
Because we have broken the oaths we've sworn?

What a question to end with! Your poems are always so thought-provoking. Loved it!
Or have they simply been supplanted by a younger, even more capricious generation of gods
this is really cool
They likely do look at us with scorn. Nicely said.
Oooo, I especially loved those last two lines!
