The Old Guard

Any movement must be made with crisp precision,

Every step calculated and always on time

My uniform perfectly pressed, not a wrinkle to be found,

I wear it proudly, and without my rank pinned to my chest

All I have is my bearing and gun,

So not to outrank or showboat my battles won,

Always on guard, until properly relieved

The mission comes first, as stated in our creed.

The air is thick with somber,

The wind carries the echoes from a bagpiper

And a tear trickles from your eye…as you stand there in silence showing your respect

In honor of whom we will never know, but always remember…this too I will protect.

For their sacrifice, I’m honored to give my time,

To remain on guard,

For them I will guard all day and night,

Rain or shine

With a click of my heels, I will take your burdens and strife

Til the last shot’s fired, I will protect you with my life.

You can rest easy now soldier, I got your six.

You did your time,

You gave your life to save mine,

Today, I give my life to protect thine.
