The Life They Lived

And I think of them at peace in their graves.

In the hallowed ground they lay

Remembering a life they lived, so brave.

Their lives definitely changed in the Nav'.

To fight for freedom, one joins without delay.

And I think of them at peace in their graves.

And soon visions overtook them like waves

Of an ocean that caused their hearts to pay,

Remembering a life they lived, so brave.

Peace unattainable, they were slaves

In their minds, awaiting for that day.

And I think of them at peace in their graves.

A road to glory...to peace they did pave.

A road we should follow, lighting our way

Remembering a life they lived, so brave.

Holding honor deeper than the deepest cave

I pray that patriotism will stay!

And I think of them at peace in their graves

Remembering a life they lived, so brave.

This is a villanelle that I wrote over a decade ago in high school creative writing class... I just found it in an old notebook from the class. My gradnfather served in the Navy.
