I Didn’t Know Cold Until I Left Home
I spent most of my life in a place where winter was more of a suggestion than a commitment. I’m from a part of Australia where the sun doesn’t really set, it just clocks off late, like a coworker who refuses to go home. Winter meant slightly cooler evenings, maybe a hoodie if I was feeling dramatic, and the ocean still warm enough to take a dip in (for those brave enough anyway).

I said I hate you, but it wasn’t true. A venom loosed before I knew its weight. My deepest regret is the hate I drew. My voice had cracked; my shaking chin withdrew.

The door at the end of the hall still had the peeling star sticker on it. It was the only bit of colour on that side of the house. It was bright yellow once, now faded to a soft, sleepy gold. He remembered sticking it on with her when she was six, her tiny hand guiding his much larger one, insisting that “every real room needs a star or it’s not official.”

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I think I saw the life I’m living now when I was sixteen. I think I saw it in a flash of insight, only to forget the specifics of it a moment later. Like my future self knew what I was going through (because they remembered), so they showed my old self, at my lowest low, to show me that it does get better.

Doorway Dreaming
The door was the size of a cathedral wall, and it had no business being under the ice. At first the archaeologists thought it was a seam in the glacier—a trick of pressure and light. But when Dr. Keene brushed away the frost with the back of his glove, the pattern beneath was too precise. Iron, or something that only pretended to be iron. Lines inlaid with gold. A lattice of circles and symbols older than language but unfortunately for him, they seemed intentional. They called it a door because that was easier than admitting it looked like one.
