The Four-Legged And Otherwise Who Save Us Daily
An Ode to the Emotional and Medical Support Animals
To the dogs who fetch medicines, alert help, or turn on the lights,
You were taught how to save lives.
To aid humans in their daily needs,
to be there for them when they can't breathe.
When they are scared or sad, they aren't alone,
because you're there, a personal furry hero at home.
To the cats who sit in laps and endure,
in fact, you take it upon yourselves to give us the purr,
when hands that stroke out anxiety and fear,
and that fur probably has soaked up more than a few tears.
To the random animal that's taken on a human,
to be there for them in their darkest moments,
know that none of us humans deserve animals,
angels sent to earth in disguise to love and protect us.
but we were given the gift of animals, us People,
They are better than two legs could ever compete though.
They love anything with a kind and pure heart,
they keep us warm, safe, and comforted through the dark.
They don't know anything else but love us unconditionally,
even if they are tools for our own safety.
So thank you selfless beings of pure love.
Thank you for taking care of us.
Thank you, so very very much.

Epilogue
I sat in my office, twisting the wooden ring that Leon had carved for me on my finger. I was uncomfortable, hot, and cranky. And I was bored. Leon was making me a cup of tea in the adjoined kitchen. Estrakulius was resting peacefully next to me against the desk. I had taken up residence in CiCi’s old office as it was easier than moving everything into mine. It had been interesting to find things about CiCi after she was gone. It made me feel like she was still here and comforted me. And she was right, all of the millions and millions of reports were very helpful, no matter how much I hated them.

Lovely, just lovely. Had a furry purr-er on my lap this AM comforting me through a difficult day. He definitely soaked up some tears while staring into my eyes and somehow, without words, letting me know everything would be OK and that I was welcome to stay as long as I needed. Thanks for this sacred echo here tonight. I've been bookended by beauty and it made today worth all of it.
