The Australian Outback
Where wilderness meets serenity

She rides the red dusty track with a kookaburra upon her shoulder,
Smiling haphazardly at its laughter when it greets its pack,
They are travelling companions in this story of life,
Friends of nature, lending an assisting hand for anything they lack.
**
She walks the dusty hills of moisture-less sands,
Calling the critters forward from far and wide,
Hissing the call of the serpents as they forage in burrows,
Scattering the rodents that attempt to hide.
**
She calls forth the hawks from the highest treetops,
Feeding them slices of steak from a kangaroo’s hind leg,
Road kill put to good use to nourish the lord of the skies,
Never wanting the glorious beasts to scrounge and beg.
**
She skips in joy at the sight of a long legged emu,
Giggling in glee as she runs a tough race,
But she doesn’t stand a chance with the speed of the agile,
Not even coming close to keeping its pace.
**
She whispers in the caves of depth and beauty,
Hearing the echo reverb as it bounces from wall to wall,
Tiny echidnas with quills quietly clicking,
Answers her wildness as they heed her call.
**
She scours the edge of the riverbank of trails and slides,
Signs of an apex predator close by,
Hidden in the murky waters awaiting an ambush,
Ready to pounce, its prey destined to die.
**
She wallows in the beauty of Mother Nature,
At home in the wild, born to it alone,
Recharging her batteries from the chaotic city living,
Loving every animal, plant, grain of sand and hard stone.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Harsh and beautiful! You painted quite the picture. I thoroughly enjoyed this :)
Love it. Although I think I'd probably be terrified to take that hike. Well done.
