The Abyss

A Poem Written after Quitting a Dead End Job

Darkness beneath me

My feet are free

Falling towards the uncertainty

Of it. The pit beckons,

I leave the masses behind.

The door I enter has no other side.

My vision is broken

And mind is shattered,

But I gather

That anything is better

Than nothing.

Doing nothing,

Thinking nothing,

Being nothing.

Not a thing

In the world will keep me from them,

The dreams that keep me up at night.

My sight is fixed on that distant light.

It tries to hide

But I spy the lies

That tantalize

My mind to find

Reasons why

I shouldn’t try.

I say “no more.”

No more pursuing paper

Just happiness.

The abyss

No longer frightens me.

The loneliness is ecstasy.

Freedom in the unknown.

Is it falling if I have wings?
