Poet Laureate
A poet laureate is a poet who is honoured for being, in theory, the best of his or her generation and given benefits in exchange for being required to perform certain duties. The institution is a British one, but it has been copied in the United States along somewhat different lines, and there are also poets laureate in Canada, New Zealand and a few other countries. It is therefore important to distinguish what the differences are, to avoid confusion.

Sylvia P., The Grinch, and Me
Any mention of scissors makes me think of Sylvia Plath; they show up in a poem of hers. Can she and I both write about scissors? The better question is probably whether I dare put myself through the torment of living up to her standard? After heavy consideration, yes, I do dare. Do I have any right to even put myself in a sentence with her? No. But really, this scissor thing is hardly even comparable (I tell myself consolingly): her scissors were kitchen, mine are sewing. Hers were lost in the yard with the daffodils; mine get lost in the yards of fabric on my too-small table.

Open Letter to a Young Poetic Genius
NB: I wrote this open letter in January 2021, which got lost among a million pixels at the end of a wholly unrelated Word document. As I was by chance editing that document today, I happily found the letter. Though I intended to at the time, in losing it I forgot to send it to Troy, but I have now.
