What's Necessary
Tribute to Malcolm X
A man is nothing unless he measures up
to the standard that he is given
When the history books are written
and the final page has been turned
And what is known about the world
has been manifested
We will say that we did what
was necessary. We fought
for our rights and made it
better for our children
We did not let all the ugliness
in the world make us back down.
Like a determined farmer,
we drove that plowshare
and we drove that ox
until we made this world better
Without regret, without discord
We fought and we built
a better world. It is not
for the ignorance to decide
It is not for hatred to decide
It is for justice to decide
We cannot be satified
with meagerness
We cannot avail bigotry
no longer. A man only
has a certain time on this earth
to make a change and stand
for what's right. That time
is now and that time must be
well spent for he has to answer
his Creator. And I'm gonna say
and I'm gonna know that all
the good done and all the fighting
done will speak on all our beloved brothers
and beautiful sisters behalf.
We did what was necessary
Necessary calls action and action
will bring justice.
