my sister said

he looks wooden in photos

i suppose he does

look sort of rigid

i don't think he liked having his picture taken

+

his weathered skin

made him look like he was carved from a wise old tree

rigid on some things

principals and loyalty

but giving when it mattered

like willow

a very giving tree

+

solid

dependable

tall

like an oak

good for climbing

shoulders make good perches

for little birds

to feel safe

+

he loved trees

forests

animals

nature

birds

how lucky i am to know he's just around the next corner

any time i'm surrounded by trees

+

cut down before his time

we count the rings

gently

like a rosary

memories clicking

+

wood burns

now he's ash

scattered

i wish we had more photos

because under those stiff perches

and wooden smile

beat a sequoia heart

A lovely tribute to a tower and sheltering presence. I went back and read this three times: "we count the rings gently like a rosary memories clicking"

Absolutely lovely LC, I love the analogy with the oak, so poignant and strong. Yes the rings, so important.

As deep as the heartwood of a tree. A beautifully rendered portrait

What a lovely beautiful tree poem. So sad the tree was cut down and turned to ash. Very well written! 😇
